Student Life Initiatives

Student Life Initiatives are programs under the Department of Student Life that provide students with access to various communities and programs on campus that promote inclusion and diversity. These programs are part of Student Life’s mission to provide a residential campus that promotes growth and development of its residents. The following programs are offered under Student Life Initiatives:

The Espacio Cultural Latinx (E.C.L.) works to provide our Latinx community with a safe space where studies and enriching conversation can take place. Our goal is to build awareness of Latinx issues and the rich culture by building a foundation that encourages growth both for the Berea College community and for its students. We approach these goals by creating culturally relevant and community building programming and activities. Click here to learn more about the Espacio Cultural Latinx.

Gender Inclusive Housing (G.I.H.) is an inclusive, voluntary environment where students who identify as transgender, non-binary, gender nonconforming, or allies to those communities can live in the same room with other students who identify as a member or ally to the transgender, non-binary, and gender nonconforming communities. Sisterhood of Queens United Among Diasporas (S.Q.U.A.D.) aims to provide a safe emotional space that allows young Black and Brown women on campus to feel included, empowered, and celebrated. Students will be mentored to learn the key principles of self-love, authenticity, resilience, respect, and comradery as a means for navigating Berea College and post-graduate life. We aim to provide resources and skills that benefit the students’ scholarly, professional, emotional, and mental well-being. Click here to learn more about S.Q.U.A.D.
