Berea’s 12th Annual Founders’ Day Convocation Honors Kirke Smith

Kirke Smith, the first dean of education at Lincoln Institute, a school initiated by Berea College after Kentucky’s Day Law (1904) forbade interracial education in Kentucky, will be honored at the twelfth annual Berea College Founders’ Day Convocation on October 6 at 3 p.m. in Phelps Stokes Chapel, 99 years after Lincoln Institute first opened its doors.Smith will be honored with the John G. Fee Award that honors primarily African American alumni who attended Berea College between 1866-1904 and who gave distinguished service to their communities, especially in the field of education, and whose lives reflect the ideals of Berea College founder John G. Fee as expressed in the college’s motto, “God has made of one blood all peoples of the earth.”The award will be accepted by five of Smith’s grandchildren. ”Dinner on the Grounds” explores African-American and Appalachian music

On April 20, Dr. Kathy Bullock, professor of music at Berea, will present “African and African-American Musical Connections in Appalachia” during the Appalachian center’s “Dinner on the Grounds.” Her talk will begin at 11:45 a.m. in the Appalachian center gallery in the Bruce Building where a light lunch will be served. Theatrics Celebrate Black History Month

“Black history is American history. We don’t need a month; it should be celebrated all the time” stated Adanma Onyedike Barton, director of Berea’s version of the play The Last Black Man in the Whole Entire World. This play is rarely performed due to its particular focus on African American stereotypes. This year Berea College held a variety of activities and programs in celebration of Black History Month such as an Intercultural/Interracial Community Dialogue Dinner which is designed to bring members of the campus community together to discuss race and other experiences relating to diversity.
