Setting Sail: Berea Forestry Logs White Oak Trees for Ship Restoration

A writer, photographer, a history professor and tree-logger from all across the nation were brought to the small town of Berea Thursday afternoon for their one shared similarity in the interests of John Steinbeck and the restoration of The Western Flyer.

The Western Flyer, known as “most famous fishing vessel ever to have sailed,” was made famous with the sailing of the author Steinbeck, along with marine biologist Ed Ricketts, in their 1940 journey to the Gulf of California, which helped accumulate the notes for their 1951 book, “The Log from the Sea of Cortez.”

Horse Logging Conference Features Demonstrations

Berea College will host a horse-logging conference at its Forestry Outreach Center October 29 through November 3. To culminate the week-long event, the public is invited to a free day of demonstrations and presentations on Saturday, November 3, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Speakers include noted Kentucky author and sustainable forestry advocate Wendell Berry. The event is open to people of all ages and takes place at the Berea College Forestry Outreach Center on Highway 21, just east of Berea. Construction Begins On Outreach Center At Berea College Forest

Officials at Berea College announced that construction is set to begin this week on a Forest Outreach Center at the Indian Fort Trail and Forest.

Berea’s Forest Outreach Center will introduce visitors to the history of the College Forest and the mission of Berea College. With approximately 5,000 square feet, the building will include space to provide a curated description of the College Forest; a multi-purpose space that could be used as either a classroom or conference room for up to 80 people; a warming kitchen; public and private restrooms; and offices for the College Forestry Department staff. Horse Power Equals Horse Sense

Two teams of Suffolk Punch draft horses, along with personnel and equipment came to the Berea College Forest to conduct some intensive horse logger training. Horse logging demonstrates Berea College’s longstanding commitment to plain living, sustainability and “green” practices on campus and beyond. More than just recreational space for hiking, the College forest is an extension of the classroom and provides an experiential laboratory outside of the academic classroom. Berea College Supplies Logs for Ship Restoration

Even though Berea College’s Forest is several hundred miles inland from the Atlantic coast, some of its timber has found a special purpose in the restoration of the Mayflower (II) ship moored at Plymouth, Massachusetts. College Forester Clint Paterson recently described Berea’s role in the ship’s refurbishment in an article (below) in the Berea Citizen newspaper.
