Berea College Featured in The Princeton Review’s Guide to Green Colleges: 2019 Edition

Berea College is one of the nation’s most environmentally responsible colleges, according to The Princeton Review, the education services company that just published the 2019 edition of its Guide to Green Colleges.

Known as a leader in turning the Bluegrass state “green,” Berea College is one of 413 schools profiled in the new guide.

The guide is based on a survey the company conducted in 2018–19 of administrators at hundreds of four-year colleges about their institutions’ commitments to the environment and sustainability. The guide states, “Berea College is a model for sustainability in higher education for the Appalachian region and beyond.”

Berea College ‘Deep Green’ Residence Hall Achieves Living Building Challenge Certification

Berea is the site of the world’s first Living Building-certified student residence hall and the only building

in Kentucky that meets the rigorous Living Building Challenge green standards.

Berea, Ky. —Berea College continues to turn the Bluegrass state “green” and, in the process, is receiving national acclaim. Berea College Opens One of the World’s Greenest Residence Halls

Three years in the making, one of the world’s “greenest” residence hall, Berea College’s newly constructed “Deep Green” Residence Hall, is open to students for the 2013 fall term. Dubbed “Deep Green” until a permanent name is chosen, this 42,000 square foot, three-story facility with 66 rooms will house 120 students.

Deep Green is expected to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) v2009 Platinum Certification by the U.S. Green Building Council and meet Petal Recognition under the Living Building Challenge 2.0 (LBC) by the International Living Future Institute. Pending these certifications, college officials expect this building to be recognized as one of the greenest in the world. Berea College & Messer Construction Co. partner with Kentucky Labor Cabinet to promote jobsite safety

Berea College Begins Construction on “Deep Green Residence Hall”

Berea College will begin construction on what will be the most energy-efficient residence hall in the commonwealth of Kentucky, if not the country, in April 2012. The three-story, 42,000 square foot building – referred to as the “Deep Green Residence Hall” – will be constructed adjacent to Boone Tavern Hotel & Restaurant and will house 120 students in 66 rooms.
