Berea Students Travel in the Summer

Summer is not only a time for relaxing, but also for learning, exploring, reflecting, and expanding one’s horizons. Berea students are involved in a myriad of activities and adventures both in Appalachia and abroad this summer. Many students are building their resumes and improving their career skills by interning at tech companies, schools, hospitals, and even here at Berea’s own Grow Appalachia Program. Along with the internships off campus, the Entrepreneurship for the Public Good (EPG) hosts twenty students for the Summer Institute, an eight-week study of entrepreneurial leadership through community economic development. Berea College Graduate Wins Excellence in Entrepreneurship Award

Berea College graduate, Hong Zhang Durandal, has won the Young Entrepreneur award from the Excellence in Entrepreneurship Awards for Eastern and Southern Kentucky.  While still a student at Berea College, Durandal founded an energy-saving consulting company called Energy Hunters.  Since graduation he has been diligently working to grow his business and received recognition on Monday from the state of Kentucky. Social Entrepreneur Ben Powell presents Berea College Convocation, Feb. 23

Ben Powell shares with Berea’s next generation of change makers how he cultivates change using his innovative approach toward social responsibility. Powell’s Berea College convocation lecture, “Sustainable Enterprise: Agora Partnerships,” on February 23 at 3 p.m. in Phelps Stokes Auditorium is free and open to the public. Hong Ren Zhang Durandal

Many business majors just hope to get a good job once they’re out of college. Berea College senior Hong Durandal, however, can’t wait that long. He has started his own local energy consulting firm — Energy Hunters — which he runs and balances with his schoolwork and labor position at the college. This isn’t just some pie-in-the-sky, glorified lemonade stand business, either. Oh no, you can watch former president Bill Clinton speak about Energy Hunters at its website (link below). Obviously, this is a great achievement regardless of the circumstances, but it is especially impressive if you know Hong’s unconventional journey to America, to Berea, and to the field of sustainability. Student Entrepreneurs Earn Recognition

The Sixth Appalachian IDEAS [Innovation, Development, Enterprise, Action and Services] Network Showcase, a regional, multi-university, entrepreneurial education initiative, has announced the winners of its competition to develop entrepreneurial ventures that address challenges within local communities. The event, sponsored by The Algernon Sydney Sullivan Foundation, was hosted at Berea College by students in the Entrepreneurship for the Public Good (EPG) program, which creates learning experiences for undergraduate students to practice and implement entrepreneurial leadership in Appalachia. Nathan Hall Pursues Biofuels to Help Local Communities
