Berea College Planetarium Hosting ‘International Observe the Moon Night’ Event
The Berea College Planetarium will host an event Saturday in observance of International Observe the Moon Night.
The event, which is free to the public, will be from 7-8:30 p.m., weather permitting. The planetarium is located on the top floor of the Margaret A. Cargill Natural Sciences and Health Building, 271 North Main Street, Berea.
“International Observe the Moon Night is a great way to learn more about lunar science and exploration,” said Dr. Tracy Hodge, associate professor at Berea College. “We are happy to be able to invite the public back to the Planetarium post-Covid.”

The Planetarium provides a high-quality educational and entertainment experience that inspires curiosity and wonder about the natural word. Previously, located in the old Hall Science Building, the fully digital Planetarium opened in Berea College’s new Margaret A. Cargill Natural Sciences and Health Building in October 2018.
In addition to Saturday’s special event, the Planetarium offers regular shows weekly. Friday shows are from 7-7:45 p.m., with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. Sunday shows are from 4-4:45 p.m., with doors opening at 3:30 p.m. All shows are open to the public, with masks and vaccinations required. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children and seniors.

- Oct. 21, 23 – Europe to the Stars
- Oct. 28, 30 – Life: A Cosmic Story
The Planetarium is also teaming up with Berea College’s Forestry Outreach Center to host four Star Parties at the Pinnacles in the Berea College Forest. Astronomy students will discuss Native American sky stories and point out constellations in the autumn sky during these events, which will take place from 7-9 p.m. on Oct. 12, Oct. 26, Nov. 9 and Nov. 12. These events are held weather permitting and are free and open to the public.
The Planetarium is also available for rent for private showings and special events.

Ezell National Tour Launches in Berea Over Earth Day Weekend
Ezell: Ballad of a Land Man, an award-winning outdoor eco-cultural theater, music and meal experience will be presented at the Berea College Forestry Outreach Center and the Pinnacles over Earth Day weekend, April 21 to 24, 2022.
Ezell is an environmental, cultural and spiritual parable derived from living in the foothills of Appalachia, one man among many seeking to make sense of the time, place and condition in which we live. In the story, Ezell’s choices, traumas, ancestors and more intersect with themes of domination and resilience as he seeks to take advantage of an anticipated fracking boom and the opportunity to reconnect with the people and land of his raising.

Berea College Recognized for Outstanding Service to Environmental Education
Berea College was recognized by the North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE) with the 2019 Outstanding Service to Environmental Education by an Organization award for incorporating environmental education into its sustainability initiatives.

Setting Sail: Berea Forestry Logs White Oak Trees for Ship Restoration

A writer, photographer, a history professor and tree-logger from all across the nation were brought to the small town of Berea Thursday afternoon for their one shared similarity in the interests of John Steinbeck and the restoration of The Western Flyer.
The Western Flyer, known as “most famous fishing vessel ever to have sailed,” was made famous with the sailing of the author Steinbeck, along with marine biologist Ed Ricketts, in their 1940 journey to the Gulf of California, which helped accumulate the notes for their 1951 book, “The Log from the Sea of Cortez.”

Horse Logging Conference Features Demonstrations
Wendell Berry among Featured Speakers
Berea College will host a horse-logging conference at its Forestry Outreach Center October 29 through November 3. To culminate the week-long event, the public is invited to a free day of demonstrations and presentations on Saturday, November 3, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Speakers include noted Kentucky author and sustainable forestry advocate Wendell Berry. The event is open to people of all ages and takes place at the Berea College Forestry Outreach Center on Highway 21, just east of Berea. Construction Begins On Outreach Center At Berea College Forest
Officials at Berea College announced that construction is set to begin this week on a Forest Outreach Center at the Indian Fort Trail and Forest.
Berea’s Forest Outreach Center will introduce visitors to the history of the College Forest and the mission of Berea College. With approximately 5,000 square feet, the building will include space to provide a curated description of the College Forest; a multi-purpose space that could be used as either a classroom or conference room for up to 80 people; a warming kitchen; public and private restrooms; and offices for the College Forestry Department staff.
