The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program named 21 Berea College students as 2022 award winners. This record-setting number of students received more than $92,000 in funding to study abroad through the Gilman program.

Berea College has 11 Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship recipients to study or intern abroad. They are among other American undergraduate students at 467 U.S. colleges from all 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. This cohort of Gilman Scholars will study or intern in 96 countries through the end of 2022.
Berea College’s Gilman scholarship recipients include Bertrina Iransi, junior computer science major from Jefferson County, Ky.; Cora Allison, junior peace and social justice major from Washington County, Tenn.; Hannah Rapien, junior communications and Asian studies major from Blount County, Tenn.; Isabella Ray, junior communications major from Carroll County, Ky.; Kshitiz Dhungyel, sophomore business administration major from Jefferson County, Ky.; Lona Cobb, senior history and anthropological archaeology major from Bell County, Ky.; Maria Martinez, junior biology and child and family studies major from Whitfield County, Ga.; Megan McEahern, junior art history major from Roane County, Tenn.; Victoria Jackson, junior communications major from Pulaski County, Ky.; Yennifer Coca Izquierdo, junior political science major from Jefferson County, Ky.; and Zoe Medeiros, junior English major from Sumner County, Tenn.
Continuing a long tradition of students winning Gilman scholarships, Berea College was named the top U.S. college for having the most 2018-2019 Gilman International Scholarship undergraduates, 21, among colleges with enrollments under 5,000. Berea also was recognized in other categories, including top producers for first-generation students and top producer for most diverse destinations for studying abroad.

Sixteen Berea College students won Gilman Scholarships for international study this summer in seven countries on five continents. Morgan Guess will study in Argentina; Justin Vankirk in Australia; Kerron Liggins and Caitlyn Roberts in Ecuador; Ethan Dye in France; Moriah Avery, Kristen Timmins and Victoria Otto in Ireland; and Furaha Irankunda and Elizabeth Owens in Tanzania. Another student, Izabella Walker, was named an alternate for study in Thailand. Six other Berea students had previously been notified earlier this spring that their advance scholarship applications had been approved for study abroad this summer. They include Lucas Collett and Brianna Dewitt who will study in Ireland, Nicole Itumba in Argentina, Kailyn Johnson in Sri Lanka, Day’sha’ron Sloan in China and Alonna Walker in Tanzania.

The U.S. Department of State announced its inaugural list of U.S. higher-education institutions that sent the most students overseas on the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program in the 2016-17 academic year. Berea College has been recognized for its success in making international study and internships more accessible and inclusive for American students of all backgrounds through the Gilman Program.
The State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, in collaboration with the Institute of International Education, compiles the list, organized by institution size and type. Berea College was cited for success among top small colleges and universities with fewer than 5,000 undergraduates. Berea College’s Center for International Education announced that Kris Tina Anderson, Caleb Bannister, Dorothy Coe, Timothy Hammett, Kyree Hobson, Dominique Jenkins, Emily Newton, Brandon Pollock, Ruth King and Layne Sinkhorn as recipients of the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. This award, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, provides funds to study abroad during the Fall 2017-18 Academic Year. The 10 American students will complete coursework in Peru, the Czech Republic, China, South Korea, Cyprus, India, Bhutan, France, Japan, Brazil, and South Africa. Five Berea College students have been selected to receive the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. Seven Berea College students are among the 850 American undergraduate students from 324 colleges and universities across the U.S. selected to receive the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. Gabriella Bugge, Elaine Barkley, Olivia Cundiff, Julie Jent, Joseph Leis, Kamryn Mason and Lilia Mundelius are the Berea students receiving Gilman Scholarships, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, to study or intern abroad during the fall term of the 2016-2017 academic year. Berea College’s Center for International Education (CIE) has announced that 11 students have been selected to receive the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The 11 recipients from Berea are part of a pool of 950 American undergraduate students from 356 colleges and universities across the nation selected to study or intern abroad during the summer 2016 term. Berea College’s Gilman Scholarship winners are: Daryl Sullivan, Nieva Arana, Jennifer Blume, Deanna Ellis, Jazmine Escamilla, Nicholas Oliver, Justice Wallace, Anna Reich, Willie Gosnell, Michael Moorer, and Amos Izerimana, who will study abroad in Ghana, Greece, Japan, The Gambia, Tanzania, Italy, Switzerland, and Costa Rica. Three other Berea College students, Esther Omolola, Rebecca Dixon, and Julie Michael, were named as alternates for studying in Argentina, Ghana, and Costa Rica. Berea College students received a total of $31,500 to help cover their summer expenses and a grand total of $61,000 for 20 students for the 2015-16 cycle.
