Dr. Kathy Bullock and Friends Uncovering the Songs of Slavery and Emancipation

Dr. Kathy Bullock and Friends will perform the “Songs of Slavery and Emancipation,” a powerful collection of songs originally written and sung by abolitionists and enslaved people in hopes of freedom on Sunday, Sept. 18, at 3 p.m. in Berea College’s Phelps Stokes Chapel. The performance is part of the Stephenson Concert Series. Dr. Bullock, the former chairperson of the College’s Music Department, is one of three music directors on the project.

Súle Greg Wilson, founding member of Carolina Chocolate Drops, will perform at Ballad Night at Berea College on Friday, April 22 at 7:30 p.m. in Gray Auditorium, Presser Hall. The evening is hosted by the Berea College Folk-Roots Ensemble.

Wilson will present a 30-minute set of African American ballads which will be followed by a ballad round robin. The performance is free and open to the public. All audience members must be masked as per college policy due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

48th Celebration of Traditional Music at Berea College: October 14-17, 2021

The 48th annual Berea College Celebration of Traditional Music (CTM) will take place Oct. 15-17 and will feature, due to COVID, a mixture of both in-person and live-streamed events.

The CTM seeks to represent homemade music passed on from person to person in the Appalachian Region, and the musicians who play it. It is supported by a generous grant by the L. Allen Smith Memorial Fund and is presented by the Loyal Jones Appalachian Center, the Music Department, the Celebration of Traditional Music Committee, and the members of the Berea College Folk-Roots Ensemble.

A pre-CTM Stephenson Memorial convocation concert performance by John McCutcheon will take place Thursday, Oct. 14 at 8 p.m. at Phelps-Stokes Chapel. This is the only evening concert open to the public. The event is free, and masks and COVID-19 vaccination are required.

Berea College Joins with Other Colleges and Universities in Choral-Orchestral Performance

Five musical ensembles from three Kentucky regional colleges and universities will join the Berea College Concert Choir in a collaborative performance Nov. 3 and 4. The concert in Berea will take place Sunday, Nov. 4 at 3 p.m., at Union Church. An identical program will be performed on the main stage at Norton Center in Danville at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday evening, Nov. 3. Both concerts are free to the public. Miguel Ángel Ortega Bañales, who is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in music at Berea College, was awarded the Audience Choice Award in the seventh Audrey Rooney Vocal Competition of the Kentucky Bach Choir. Bañales, a student of Berea College music professor Mark R. Calkins, competed against eight student singers in the recent live vocal competition in Lexington. Senior Chemistry Major Receives Berea’s 2017-2018 Red Foley Memorial Music Award

Brenna MacMillan ’18, a senior Chemistry major from Winchester, Kentucky, received Berea College’s 2018 Red Foley Memorial Music Award. Following graduation, she plans to move to Nashville, Tennessee, to perform with her brother Theo MacMillan (2016 Red Foley recipient) and pursue her musical career.

This award, established in memory of Country Music Hall of Fame star Red Foley, is presented annually by Berea College to a talented Berea College student in recognition of his or her musical contributions to the social life of the campus community. The award assists the recipient in a professional music career, if he or she so desires, and promotes the kind of music associated with Red Foley’s career, such as folk, country, bluegrass, gospel and popular music. Berea College Hosting Annual Festival of Spirituals Workshop and Concert February 24

Berea College’s annual Festival of Spirituals will be Saturday, Feb. 24 in Gray Auditorium at Presser Hall. The all-day event includes a combination of free workshops, recitals and concerts featuring presentations and performances led by members of the Berea College Music Department faculty and guest artists including Diane White-Clayton, Patrice Turner, Shareese Arnold, Nyghél Byrd, Lindsay Clavere, Gabriel Evans and James Dreiling and Combo.

A Musical Celebration of Christmas

Berea College Concert Choir at Christmas Concert 2016Christmas is coming and you can celebrate it along with Berea College students. Mark your calendar for December 25 when the Kentucky Educational Television network broadcasts Listen – A Musical Celebration of Christmas at Berea College. This holiday special features a diverse mix of Christmas and holiday music performed by the College’s students and music faculty. The program includes performances by Berea’s Folk Roots Ensemble, Women’s Chorus, Chamber Singers, Concert Choir, Black Music Ensemble and Bluegrass Ensemble, among others. The program also features a Nativity reading from Berea’s newly acquired copy of the St. John’s Bible, the first illuminated Bible published since the invention of the modern printing press. The special program airs Christmas morning on KET2 at 10a.m. Eastern (9 a.m. Central) and on Christmas evening on KET at 8 p.m. Eastern (7 p.m. Central).

The Berea College Concert Choir and Chamber Singers will present their 2017 fall concert “Bach, Brahms, and Bluegrass” in Gray Auditorium at 3 p.m. on Sunday, November 12. The public is invited to attend, and there is no charge for admission. Stephen Bolster will conduct the choirs. They will be joined by special guest performers the Clavere Piano Duo (Javier and Lindsay Clavere) and the Berea College Bluegrass Ensemble, led by Al White. The Berea College Bluegrass Ensemble will perform their spring concert April 22, 2017 at 8:00 p.m. in Phelps Stokes Chapel. The concert will also serve as a benefit to promote and support their upcoming European summer tour to Denmark and Ireland.
