Berea College Seeks 1,600 Donors on Sept. 3

Berea College is looking for 1,600 people to participate in its annual Giving Day on Thursday, Sept. 3. This event generates significant excitement and support for Berea’s students with contributions coming from donors locally, regionally and nationally.

Donors can support Berea’s Giving Day easily by making a gift online; by texting “BEREA” to 56512; by calling 800-457-9846; or by mailing a check to CPO 2216, Berea, KY 40404.

Edwin Embree, Berea Founder’s Grandson, the Focus of Article about Racial Prejudice

The racial injustices toward Japanese Americans confined in U.S. camps during World War II and one man’s efforts to help them is the focus of a recently-published article in HistPhil. Authored by historian Alfred Perkins, the story describes the role of philanthropist Edwin Embree, the grandson of Berea’s founder, John Gregg Fee, in protecting civil rights and ending discriminatory practices against citizens of Japanese ancestry, particularly those relocated from the west coast to the numerous internment camps in the central United States. Shirley Fowler Offers a Legacy of Support

Kentucky Couple Gives $10.7 Million Bequest

At Thanksgiving, Bereans are grateful for . . .

The Thanksgiving holiday is about gratitude. Bereans are grateful for many things, including:

  • Generous donors who support our mission of providing a high-quality education to low-income students;
  • Dedicated faculty and staff who interact with students in the classroom and in students’ labor positions.
  • A school founded to welcome “all peoples of the earth” to seek to learn and live by values of love over hate, human dignity and equality, and peace with justice.
  • The satisfaction of knowing that Berea College alumni carry those values into Appalachia, and beyond, where they work and serve.
