PBS Features Berea College in Craft in America: DEMOCRACY Episode
A new episode of Craft in America: DEMOCRACY is available to stream now on the PBS Video App, PBS.org/craftinamerica, and craftinamerica.org in advance of the PBS broadcast premiere on Dec. 11, 2020.
Craft in America: DEMOCRACYexplores how craft intertwines with our nation’s defining principles, providing inspiring examples of artists and organizations working together to embody democratic ideals. The program highlights the historic and contemporary crafts Berea College students produce through the College’s distinctive Labor program. It features interviews with students and staff in Berea’s crafts program—which includes weaving, broom making, ceramics and woodworking—and Stephen Burks, an industrial designer and educator who headed Berea’s Crafting Diversity project. Burks worked with students to design products for the Student Craft program, ensuring the inclusive diversity of Berea’s student body was represented in the craft they created.

Smithsonian Features 100 Years of Berea College Brooms
The Berea College Broomcraft Program—which marks its centennial anniversary this year—is highlighted in an online feature article in the Smithsonian Magazine.
While Berea is a liberal arts college—not a craft or art school—it is home to the country’s longest continuously operating broomcraft workshop and carries on an American craft tradition that’s rarely practiced today. In the article, Chris Robbins, director of Berea College’s broomcraft program, estimates there likely are less than 200 people worldwide who make brooms by hand for a living. Yet brooms seem to be having a renaissance, he said, perhaps due to a market trend for handmade items or to the popularity of the Harry Potter book series (Berea has a “rocket broom” in its product line). More than 60 brooms were ordered on the morning the article appeared.

Convocation to Focus on Berea Craft: A Renewable Resource
Stephen Burks, Glenn Adamson and, Berea’s own, Aaron Beale will present Berea Craft: A Renewable Resource, on Thursday, Sept. 26 at 3 p.m. in Phelps Stokes Chapel. The three will discuss the history and current tradition of craft making at Berea College and a new collaboration between Burks and the College focused on inclusive design that can sustain the mission of Berea well into the future.

Burks is the principal and founder of his company Stephen Burks Man Made LLC. He is a traveler and designer who has worked as a product development consultant in Australia, Colombia, Ghana, Haiti, India and other nations.

Westervelt Program Open to Public at Berea College
The Berea College Technology and Applied Design Department is accepting course registration for the fall 2018 Westervelt Program. The Westervelt program is offered each year to Berea townspeople as well as students, faculty and staff. The program provides excellent opportunities for individuals to develop a well-rounded educational background and pursue specific areas of interest. Woodworking Hand Tool Event at Berea College Crafts
Lie-Nielsen Toolworks®, a U.S. manufacturer of heirloom-quality woodworking tools, is bringing its popular Hand Tool Event® to Berea, Kentucky on Sept. 28 and 29 at Berea College Crafts, located in the Mueller Building, 100 Student Crafts Court. This event, which is part of the company’s ongoing international program, provides woodworkers of all ages and skill levels exposure to the benefits of traditional hand tools and techniques. The event will take place Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is an opportunity for the public to receive first-hand instruction directly from the toolmakers. Berea’s student woodcraft program is featured in the latest issue of Woodworking Crafts, a British magazine by the Guild of Master Craftsmen Publications. The article includes many photos and comments by woodcraft students as well as a profile of Andy Glenn, Berea’s woodcraft supervisor. The feature provides a brief overview of Berea College’s distinctive no-tuition model to provide a high quality education for a diverse range of students who could not otherwise afford college. The article also describes the history of the woodcraft program along with explanations of the day-to-day operations that produce the beautiful and functional crafts that consumers prize. Tim Glotzbach, Director of Berea College’s Student Crafts Program is being featured on Kentucky Life on KET – Kentucky Educational Television. Host Doug Flynn interviewed him about Berea’s student-made crafts and Berea’s new AIR Institute, which builds on the College’s tradition of serving artists. The AIR Institute expands financial opportunities for Appalachia, and promotes arts, crafts, and creative business practices so students and others in the region can learn to develop a financially sustainable living as artists and social entrepreneurs. Berea College Begins Construction on “Deep Green Residence Hall”
Berea College will begin construction on what will be the most energy-efficient residence hall in the commonwealth of Kentucky, if not the country, in April 2012. The three-story, 42,000 square foot building – referred to as the “Deep Green Residence Hall” – will be constructed adjacent to Boone Tavern Hotel & Restaurant and will house 120 students in 66 rooms.
