The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program named 21 Berea College students as 2022 award winners. This record-setting number of students received more than $92,000 in funding to study abroad through the Gilman program.

Berea College has 11 Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship recipients to study or intern abroad. They are among other American undergraduate students at 467 U.S. colleges from all 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. This cohort of Gilman Scholars will study or intern in 96 countries through the end of 2022.
Berea College’s Gilman scholarship recipients include Bertrina Iransi, junior computer science major from Jefferson County, Ky.; Cora Allison, junior peace and social justice major from Washington County, Tenn.; Hannah Rapien, junior communications and Asian studies major from Blount County, Tenn.; Isabella Ray, junior communications major from Carroll County, Ky.; Kshitiz Dhungyel, sophomore business administration major from Jefferson County, Ky.; Lona Cobb, senior history and anthropological archaeology major from Bell County, Ky.; Maria Martinez, junior biology and child and family studies major from Whitfield County, Ga.; Megan McEahern, junior art history major from Roane County, Tenn.; Victoria Jackson, junior communications major from Pulaski County, Ky.; Yennifer Coca Izquierdo, junior political science major from Jefferson County, Ky.; and Zoe Medeiros, junior English major from Sumner County, Tenn.
Berea College students Stephen Nwaloziri, Aloyce (Hans) Riziki and Sophia Winkowitsch have won the prestigious distinction of being members of the 52nd Class of Thomas J. Watson Fellows.

Watson Fellows are selected from just 40 private colleges and university partners across the United States making the Watson pool extremely competitive. This year there were 153 finalists who were nominated to compete on the national level, from which 47 Fellows were selected.

Sixteen Berea College students won Gilman Scholarships for international study this summer in seven countries on five continents. Morgan Guess will study in Argentina; Justin Vankirk in Australia; Kerron Liggins and Caitlyn Roberts in Ecuador; Ethan Dye in France; Moriah Avery, Kristen Timmins and Victoria Otto in Ireland; and Furaha Irankunda and Elizabeth Owens in Tanzania. Another student, Izabella Walker, was named an alternate for study in Thailand. Six other Berea students had previously been notified earlier this spring that their advance scholarship applications had been approved for study abroad this summer. They include Lucas Collett and Brianna Dewitt who will study in Ireland, Nicole Itumba in Argentina, Kailyn Johnson in Sri Lanka, Day’sha’ron Sloan in China and Alonna Walker in Tanzania.

The U.S. Department of State recognized Berea College as one of the U.S. higher education institutions that sent the most students overseas through the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program in academic year 2017-2018. Berea was noted for its success in making international study and internships more accessible and inclusive for American students of all backgrounds through the Gilman program.

The Berea College Center for International Education (CIE) announced that Berea College student Jesse Paul has received the prestigious Freeman-ASIA Award for education abroad purposes during the fall 2018 semester. Berea College’s Center for International Education announced that Samantha Robinson, Brandon Mitchell, Niki Clayton, Gerald Thomas, Tiana Moorer, Issac Domenech, Rebecca O’Connor and Chad Runyan are recipients of the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. This award, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, is providing $26,500 to support study abroad experiences for Berea’s students during summer 2018. The eight American students will complete coursework in Jamaica, Ghana, Japan, Costa Rica, Italy and Austria.
These Gilman Scholars receive an average of more than $3,300 per student to apply towards their study abroad or internship program costs. The program offers grants for U.S. citizen undergraduate students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies or internships abroad, thereby gaining skills critical to our national security and economic competitiveness. Students receiving a Federal Pell Grant from two- and four-year institutions who will be studying abroad or participating in a career-oriented international internship for academic credit are eligible to apply. Scholarship recipients have the opportunity to gain a better understanding of other cultures, countries, languages and economies—making them better prepared to assume leadership roles within government and the private sector. Gilman International Scholarship, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The 11 recipients from Berea are part of a pool of 950 American undergraduate students from 356 colleges and universities across the nation selected to study or intern abroad during the summer 2016 term. Berea College’s Gilman Scholarship winners are: Daryl Sullivan, Nieva Arana, Jennifer Blume, Deanna Ellis, Jazmine Escamilla, Nicholas Oliver, Justice Wallace, Anna Reich, Willie Gosnell, Michael Moorer, and Amos Izerimana, who will study abroad in Ghana, Greece, Japan, The Gambia, Tanzania, Italy, Switzerland, and Costa Rica. Three other Berea College students, Esther Omolola, Rebecca Dixon, and Julie Michael, were named as alternates for studying in Argentina, Ghana, and Costa Rica. Amanda Lucas, ’09, the new Global Studies Coordinator at Piney Woods School in Mississippi, is sharing the gift of international education with her students. During their spring break, she and her class will spend one week in China, taking part in various service projects, including teaching English to students in the capital city of Beijing. While staying with a local host family, they will visit the Great Wall of China and the “Forbidden City.” Lucas and her students will then travel to the growing cities of Shanghai and Xi’an, immersing themselves in the country’s unique culture. They will try their hands at the Chinese martial art of Taijiquan, attend a Kung Fu Show and view a “Tang Dynasty Show” that will open their eyes to traditional dances, art and music. “What better way to introduce students to global power than to visit one of the world’s fastest growing economies?” she asks. March 1, 2012 – Studying abroad is an experience of a lifetime that only some college students are exposed to. Going to an institution of higher learning in a foreign country enables you to become immersed in a new language and broaden your horizons to become more global. After looking into Berea College and Eastern Kentucky University’s study abroad programs, I found some staggering differences. I have not studied abroad myself, which doesn’t come as a surprise. The national average of university students that study abroad is just over one percent, according to NAFSA (the National Association of Foreign Student Advisors). However, Berea College sends a much higher number of students abroad than the national average. “I came to Berea College to have my faith challenged,” says Rachel Morgan, ‘11. She acknowledges that over the last three years her beliefs have been further refined through interactions with people from all over the world who have made her look at life differently and question her assertions. Citing the Bible as her source of inspiration, Rachel hopes to one day follow the footsteps of those who are truly selfless in their love for others and their devotion to the well being of the society. A psychology major, Rachel coordinates students at Academic Services, represents Berea to alumni through the Berea Ambassadors program, and works for the Center for Excellence in Learning Through Service (CELTS) as a one-one child tutor.
