PBS Features Berea College in Craft in America: DEMOCRACY Episode

A new episode of Craft in America: DEMOCRACY is available to stream now on the PBS Video App, PBS.org/craftinamerica, and craftinamerica.org in advance of the PBS broadcast premiere on Dec. 11, 2020.

Craft in America: DEMOCRACYexplores how craft intertwines with our nation’s defining principles, providing inspiring examples of artists and organizations working together to embody democratic ideals. The program highlights the historic and contemporary crafts Berea College students produce through the College’s distinctive Labor program. It features interviews with students and staff in Berea’s crafts program—which includes weaving, broom making, ceramics and woodworking—and Stephen Burks, an industrial designer and educator who headed Berea’s Crafting Diversity project. Burks worked with students to design products for the Student Craft program, ensuring the inclusive diversity of Berea’s student body was represented in the craft they created.

Berea’s Westervelt Program to Accept Fall Registrations

Beginning Sept. 10, the Berea College Technology and Applied Design Department will be accepting course registration for fall 2019 Westervelt Program classes, which will focus on woodworking. Class will begin Sept. 12 and will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in room 103A of the Danforth Technology Building.  The instructor will be David Cooke.

The Westervelt program is offered each year to Berea townspeople as well as students, faculty and staff. The program provides excellent opportunities for individuals to develop a well-rounded educational background and pursue specific areas of interest. These courses are open to persons with woodworking experience ranging from novice to expert. Participants must be at least 18 years old to enroll in the Westervelt Program. Each participant is required to bring personal safety glasses/goggles and hearing protection for use with machinery.

There will be projects for the novice woodworker to select, including making wooden kitchen implements. More experienced woodworkers may propose an individual project to the instructor for approval.

The three individual session dates are:

  • Sept. 12 to Oct. 3
  • Oct. 8 to Oct. 29
  • Oct. 31 to Nov. 21

To register, please call Farrah Stamper at 859-985-3033 on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. There is a $10 non-refundable registration fee for each block of classes. In addition, students will be responsible for any materials used.

Pine Croft, a woodworking school for adults, has been added to the repertoire of the Berea College Crafts Program and extends Berea’s support to the local, regional and national crafts communities. Located just minutes from campus and adjacent to the Berea College Forest, the woodworking school is on the site of the former Kelly Mehler’s School of Woodworking, which has been renamed The Woodworking School at Pine Croft.

Woodworking Hand Tool Event at Berea College Crafts

Attendees at a previous Hand Tool eventLie-Nielsen Toolworks®, a U.S. manufacturer of heirloom-quality woodworking tools, is bringing its popular Hand Tool Event® to Berea, Kentucky on Sept. 28 and 29 at Berea College Crafts, located in the Mueller Building, 100 Student Crafts Court. This event, which is part of the company’s ongoing international program, provides woodworkers of all ages and skill levels exposure to the benefits of traditional hand tools and techniques. The event will take place Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is an opportunity for the public to receive first-hand instruction directly from the toolmakers. British Magazine Features Student Woodcrafts

Berea’s student woodcraft program is featured in the latest issue of Woodworking Crafts, a British magazine by the Guild of Master Craftsmen Publications. The article includes many photos and comments by woodcraft students as well as a profile of Andy Glenn, Berea’s woodcraft supervisor. The feature provides a brief overview of Berea College’s distinctive no-tuition model to provide a high quality education for a diverse range of students who could not otherwise afford college. The article also describes the history of the woodcraft program along with explanations of the day-to-day operations that produce the beautiful and functional crafts that consumers prize.
