Pregnant and Parenting Students

Title IX protects the rights of pregnant and parenting students to a discrimination free education. Here are a few important things to know about these rights:

All Schools Must

  • Allow you to continue participating in work, classes, and extracurricular activities. Schools may not require pregnant students to provide a doctor’s note unless they require a doctor’s note from all students who have a physical or emotional condition.
  • Offer alternative programs or classes for pregnant students. Students may choose to participate in such programs, but schools cannot pressure them to do so.
  • Provide reasonable adjustments such as a larger desk and elevator access.
  • Excuse absences due to pregnancy or childbirth as long as it is deemed necessary by the physician.

If you are a pregnant or parenting Berea College student, and have experienced discrimination, or feel you need additional support to continue your education contact your Title IX Coordinator, Joslyn Glover for assistance.
