Learning Resources and Information
The Appalachian Center can connect you with resources to support your teaching.

• Our Appalachian Artifacts Collection has been used to support classes and research across the campus.

• The Appalachian Gallery is full of dynamic exhibits that can complement your own classroom work.  It is a perfect place to meet your class for a film or a guest lecture with one of the faculty or staff from the Center.

• Faber Library (with handcrafted furniture and natural lighting) serves as “one stop shop” for:
  • researching Appalachia
  • housing hundreds of books
  • magazines
  • DVDs
  • CDs
  • newsletters related to the Appalachian region and issues
• Items do not circulate but can be used in the Faber.

Let us help you find the resources and information you need to include the region in your teaching or scholarship.  If we don’t have it ourselves, chances are Hutchins Library Special Collections or another regional collection does!

Expertise and Networking
The Loyal Jones Appalachian Center has in-house expertise available for guest lectures, class discussions or consultation. Topics are endless, but here are some possibilities:

We can also connect you with others on campus, in the region and in the Appalachian Studies community who share your research or project interests. We would welcome the opportunity to help you infuse Appalachian topics and materials into your own course. Just give us a call.

Support for Regional Scholarship and Research
Recently, we’ve started a faculty development program that we call Appalachian Fellows.  Berea faculty are eligible to apply by contacting the Director of the Center.  For 2010-2011, Dr. Scott Steele and Dr. Kate Egerton are Appalachian Fellows.  Each is working on a special project in Appalachia, with support from the Center.

Here are other ways the Center can support Berea faculty:

• We have funds to help faculty (and students) attend or present at the annual Appalachian Studies Conference. For more information on the annual Appalachian Studies Conference, see www.appalachianstudies.org.

• We can help you or your students prepare a proposal to present at the annual Appalachian Studies Conference.

• We have limited funds to support research projects that involve the Appalachian Region.

• We can also help connect you with regional publishers and journals that may publish your work related to the region.

• Interested research or travel in Appalachia? We can help you with contacts and ideas.

Appalachian Seminar & Tour
Every other summer, the Center plans an intensive week long immersion into Appalachian Studies, including a bus tour of the Region, for faculty and staff.  If you are interested in attending, please let us know.  Learn more about the Appalachian Seminar & Tour.
