Hispanic Outreach Project’s “HOP Talks” Shares Information about Current Issues and Culture

celts-logo-200x200The Hispanic Outreach Project of Berea College is offering a series of educational presentations in which representatives from Kentucky-based organizations present about Latino issues and cultural topics. These talks are held on Berea College’s campus.

The next HOP Talk, held October the 26th at 7:00 PM in the Woods-Penniman Commons, will feature the Folkloric Ballet Casa de la Cultura, a dance group which offers physical activity, recreation, entertainment, and learning for its participants and audience members. While promoting team work, the program also encourages family and friends to show support and get involved during the dance performances. In addition, the program fosters pride in culture and roots, since all the participants will be able to identify the country, region and cultural significance behind every dance. 

The subsequent HOP Talk, held in the Woods-Penniman Commons at Berea College on November 16th at 5:00 PM, will feature the Kentucky Housing Corporation (KHC), which invests in affordable housing solutions by offering an array of programs and services designed to develop, preserve, and sustain affordable housing throughout the state. Speakers Davey King, Berea College class of ’91, and Laurent Houekpon both work to make the resources of KHC available to multicultural communities in Kentucky.

The Hispanic Outreach Project (HOP) is a program of the Center for Excellence in Learning through Service (CELTS) at Berea College. CELTS houses Berea College’s student-led community service and academic service-learning programs. HOP provides opportunities for Berea College students to work in collaboration with local organizations like schools and non-profit organizations to build bridges of understanding and community between the Spanish-speaking and English-speaking members of our community. It does so by offering a broad array of volunteer and community outreach opportunities for Berea College students, such as providing English and Spanish language education to various age groups.

Berea College, the first interracial and coeducational college in the South, focuses on learning, labor and service. The College only admits academically promising students with limited financial resources—primarily from Kentucky and Appalachia—but welcomes students from 41 states and 76 countries. Every Berea student receives a Tuition Promise Scholarship, which means no Berea student pays for tuition.
