President Lyle Roelofs today announced that Berea College will make substantial funds available to eastern Kentucky counties impacted by last month’s devastating flooding. The flooding affected 8,000 residents in the region.
Autumn Harvey, a junior majoring in history at Berea College, has been selected as a Newman Civic Fellow for 2021-2022 by Campus Compact, a Boston-based non-profit organization advancing the public purposes of higher education. Harvey joins 212 students from 39 states, Washington, D.C., and Mexico, to form the 2021 Newman Civic Fellow cohort.

Each year, teams of volunteers distribute grocery bags to the majority of households in the Berea community. Volunteers then gather on the following Saturday to collect filled bags, as well as to sort and shelve the food.
The annual Hunger Hurts Food Drive, coordinated by Berea College’s Center for Excellence in Learning through Service (CELTS), in collaboration with the Berea Faith Community Outreach, will run from Oct. 19 to 26.
Beginning Oct. 19, volunteers will distribute brown paper grocery bags, donated by Kroger, to local households. Community members can help by filling the bags with non-perishable food and toiletry items and placing them near their front door by 9 a.m. on Oct. 26, for volunteers to pick up.

Higher Ground will present an original one-act musical drama, Needle Work, at the Phelps Stokes Chapel at 7 p.m., Tuesday March 26, 2019. The performance includes stories collected in eastern Kentucky communities and music from the cast and local musicians. It is free and open to the public.
Needle Work examines the pros and cons of needle exchanges, where substance abusers can exchange dirty syringes for clean ones without fear of legal consequences, as a way of stemming the spread of diseases such as hepatitis and HIV/AIDS.

The Berea community responded generously to the 26th annual Hunger Hurts Food Drive with 792 bags of food. Coordinated by Berea College’s Center for Excellence in Learning through Service (CELTS), in collaboration with Berea Faith Community Outreach (BFCO), the food collection netted more than 100 bags of food than last year. Berea residents can help address local hunger needs on Wednesday, March 28, by participating in the annual Empty Bowls event and meal.
The Empty Bowls event will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Commons, located in the Woods-Penniman Building on the Berea College campus. The idea behind Empty Bowls is simple – in exchange for $10, guests will be served a meal of soup in a ceramic bowl made and donated by Berea College ceramics student volunteers and local potters. Berea College student Hunter Malone has been named a Newman Civic Fellow by Campus Compact, a Boston-based, non-profit organization working to advance the public purposes of higher education. Malone, a junior sociology major with a history minor, is one of 268 students from colleges all across America who will make up the organization’s 2018 cohort of Newman Civic Fellows.
“Hunter is a creative and collaborative student leader who is actively involved in mentoring and training others,” said Berea College President Lyle Roelofs. “He is also committed to developing opportunities for others to learn and take action on the issues that are important to them. Hosted by the Berea College Center for Excellence in Learning through Service (CELTS) and sponsored by Kentucky Campus Compact, the theme for this year’s Kentucky Hunger Dialogue is “Asset-Based Responses to Hunger.” The event will highlight successful programs already at work in our communities and present tools for engagement with hunger on three levels: emergency response, food systems, and policy change. Student groups at Berea College have planned a dynamic learning experience to provide a glimpse into what many immigrants and refugees endure when fleeing from their homes and seeking safety in a new community. The simulation, which begins at 1:00 p.m. on February 25, seeks to bring a balanced conversation to immigration policy that affirms both the perspective of refugees and that of the receiving community. As a child, Megan Naseman, ’07, was a voracious tree climber, searching out high branches around her house. Her passion for trees was so strong that her parents imposed a height rule. She could only climb trees that she could both get up and down. But when her mother spied Megan stacking chairs on a wagon to reach a high limb, they realized her passion to explore nature was instinctive.
