Each year, teams of volunteers distribute grocery bags to the majority of households in the Berea community. Volunteers then gather on the following Saturday to collect filled bags, as well as to sort and shelve the food.
The annual Hunger Hurts Food Drive, coordinated by Berea College’s Center for Excellence in Learning through Service (CELTS), in collaboration with the Berea Faith Community Outreach, will run from Oct. 19 to 26.
Beginning Oct. 19, volunteers will distribute brown paper grocery bags, donated by Kroger, to local households. Community members can help by filling the bags with non-perishable food and toiletry items and placing them near their front door by 9 a.m. on Oct. 26, for volunteers to pick up.

Sandy Bolster has dedicated her life to teaching mathematics, grades 4 through college. She has been involved with developmental math and/or computing at Berea College for over 30 years. Sandy recognizes that developmental math students often require support with study skills, time management, math anxiety, etc. As Director of Developmental Math, Sandy has coordinated support, including individual tutoring, to assist students in the program. Sandy was Instructional Computing Coordinator at Berea College for 20 years; in this position, she supported faculty with implementing technology in the curriculum, oversaw technology training, served on the committee that originated the Teaching, Learning, and Technology (TLT) lunches, and implemented the Office-Based Consultant program. Sandy also served on the Committee for Mathematics Achievement (Kentucky State Department of Education), Postsecondary Mathematics Workgroup (response to Kentucky Senate Bill 1), and the Appalachian College Association Technology Summit Planning Committee (multiple years).
Born in Chicago, IL to first-generation immigrants from Thailand, Mae first came to Berea, 21 years ago to attend Berea College. Mae credits her Berea experience with shaping her world view and always inspiring her to speak up and speak out. Upon graduation, Mae served in the AmeriCorps program in Eastern Kentucky, at a domestic violence shelter in Lexington, KY, and at a refugee resettlement center in Raleigh, NC. She spent the bulk of her professional career working in the field of human rights enforcement and advocacy. 
Katherine Silver Kelly is an Assistant Clinical Professor Law and Director of Academic Support at The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law. After graduating from Berea with a B.A. in History, she attended the University of Kentucky, Converse College, and the University of Akron School of Law, where she graduated cum laude. She earned her M.A. in education from the University of Kentucky and certification in Special Education from Converse College. Before attending law school, Katherine was an award-winning economics and government teacher. In law school she was a Dean’s Scholar, awarded the ALI/ABA Leadership Award and Arthur Goldberg Prize in Constitutional Law, and was a founding member of the Moot Court Honor Society. Following law school graduation, Katherine served as a judicial attorney and then as the director of Academic Success Programs at the University of Akron School of Law. 
I am the oldest of three children born to Mrs. Bobbie Jean Williams and the late, Mr. Elque Williams, Jr. I have one sister (Wendy Williams Burton) and one brother (Alex Williams). I am also the proud mother of Geri Alexandria Guy (Cx ’80). 
Noted philanthropist and volunteer, Kate Ireland passed away at her home at Foshalee Plantation in northern Florida on Feb. 15, 2011. She was 80 years old. A memorial service will be held in Thomasville, Georgia, at All Saints Episcopal Church on Friday, March 4, at 4 p.m.
