We share in the shock and grief resulting from the mass shooting in Orlando, Florida, earlier today. Berea’s Great Commitments, which emphasize love over hate, human dignity and equality, and peace with justice, markedly contrast with acts of hatred and terror such as this. While this incident is an attack on the values of all Bereans, we are particularly concerned for how it will be experienced by our lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans (LGBT) members of our community.
Our hearts are grieved when political and religious convictions go so seriously awry as to lead to such terrible harm to so many innocent people, such as happened previously in Charleston and now in Orlando.
Our thoughts and prayers are extended to those who were injured and the families of those who were killed. We also extend our sympathy to members of the LGBT community and the way this attack has singled them out as the objects of such blatant hatred.
As a demonstration of our solidarity with those who suffered so much in this tragedy, we will fly our campus flag at half-staff this week. We will also hold a time of remembrance on campus, gathering tomorrow (Monday) at 11:00 am in Danforth Chapel. Please join us if you are able.
Lyle Roelofs, President
(on behalf of all Bereans)
