Berea College Student Shyeila Bowers Named a Newman Civic Fellow
Shyeila “Shy” Bowers ’20
Shyeila “Shy” Bowers, a junior at Berea College, is one of 262 students named as a Newman Civic Fellow for 2019-2020 by Campus Compact, a Boston-based non-profit organization advancing the public purposes of higher education.
“Shy is a hard-working and positive student leader and undergraduate scholar,” said Berea College President Lyle Roelofs. “She uses her community-building approaches to promote dialogue and action to address pressing social issues.”

South African Couple to Serve as Guest Faculty at Berea College
Dr. Elna Boesak and Dr. Allan Boesak will join Berea College as guest faculty during most of the Spring 2018 term.

Love Over Hate
Tragic deaths occurred last week in Baton Rouge, Minneapolis and Dallas. These evil acts are sad reminders of just how long and difficult is our nation’s journey toward peace and racial justice. I ask all Bereans to remember and raise up in prayer the victims and their loved ones and to continue to hold to our ideals in all you do, seeking peace with justice and trusting in the power of love over hate.

President Roelofs Offers a Response to the Tragedy in Orlando on Behalf of Bereans
We share in the shock and grief resulting from the mass shooting in Orlando, Florida, earlier today. Berea’s Great Commitments, which emphasize love over hate, human dignity and equality, and peace with justice, markedly contrast with acts of hatred and terror such as this. While this incident is an attack on the values of all Bereans, we are particularly concerned for how it will be experienced by our lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans (LGBT) members of our community. From November 13 to the 15, eight Berea College students traveled to the foothills of the Smoky Mountains in North Carolina to attend the 2011 Lake Junaluska Peace Conference. The conference was positioned in a beautiful setting, almost idyllic. The speakers focused their topics on “Poverty, Abundance, and Peace: Seeking Economic Justice for all God’s Children,” the theme of this year’s conference. Berea College students enrolled in Peace and Social Justice courses taught by Dr. Michelle Tooley and Jason Strange attended the 2012 Lake Junaluska Peace Conference from November 8-11. Lake Junaluska is located in the Smokey Mountains of Western North Carolina and has been a Methodist Retreat Center since 1913.
