Dr. Diane White-Clayton
Dr. Diane White-Clayton will speak about “Jesus, the Ultimate Rebel with a Cause,” on Thursday, Sep. 27 at 3 p.m. at the Berea College Accent of Christian Faith Lecture in Phelps Stokes Chapel.
This lecture, sponsored by the Willis D. Weatherford Jr. Campus Christian Center, will discuss the common depiction of Jesus as frail and tender-hearted, as well as the uncommon depiction of Jesus as a rebellious, defiant trouble-maker who never allowed rules to dictate his path. Berea College, whose rebellious beginnings directly defied societal norms of the time, challenges new rebels who, through faith and determination, will change the world. Dr. Loretta Reynolds has been appointed as Dean of the Chapel at Berea College.
Reverend Reynolds’ experience in the work and mission of Berea College began in 1998. Since then, she has served as Title IX coordinator, a member of the Residence Life Team, a professor in General Studies and, most recently, as senior College chaplain and interim director of the Campus Christian Center. Reynolds is trained in first responder emergency pastoral care and in brief pastoral counseling, and she is also a Berea College Green Dot trainer. Dr. Jafar Mallahati will speak about “Friendship Among Religions and in World Politics: How Religions Can Help Expand Apology and Forgiveness,” at the Berea College Robbins Peace Lecture on Thursday, Feb. 22 at 3 p.m. in Phelps Stokes Chapel.
Mallahati is the presidential scholar in Islamic Studies at Oberlin College where he also holds the Nancy Schrom Dye Chair in Middle East and North African Studies. Mallahati received a BA in Economics from the National University in Tehran, Iran; a BS in Civil Engineering from the University of Kansas; an MS in Political Economy from the University of Oregon; and a Ph. D. from McGill University. For two years Mallahati served as Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations where he worked to end the eight-year Iran-Iraq war, gaining experience in conflict resolution and international relations. Student groups at Berea College have planned a dynamic learning experience to provide a glimpse into what many immigrants and refugees endure when fleeing from their homes and seeking safety in a new community. The simulation, which begins at 1:00 p.m. on February 25, seeks to bring a balanced conversation to immigration policy that affirms both the perspective of refugees and that of the receiving community. The annual Christmas Concert, co-sponsored by the Berea College Music Department and the Campus Christian Center, will be held on two consecutive nights this year – Friday evening December 7 and Saturday evening December 8. Both performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Union Church. All are invited to attend this popular event and to join in the singing of traditional carols accompanied by College Organist Dr. Javier Clavere. Music of the season will be performed by the college’s Black Music Ensemble, Bluegrass Ensemble, Concert Choir, Chamber Singers, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Clavere Piano Duo, and Women’s Chorus. As patrons arrive, the Megasax Quartet, and the Old-Tyme Ensemble will perform Christmas music beginning thirty minutes before the concert. Plan to attend this joyful candlelit Christmas celebration to usher in Berea’s Christmas Season! Gail E. Bowman grew up in Des Moines, Iowa, but both she and her older sister were born in Morgantown, West Virginia. Her father grew up in Des Moines, began his college work before World War II and was a Tuskegee airman during the war. But when he returned home newly married, and obtained his degree and teaching credentials, he was told that the school system In Des Moines would not be hiring any Negro teachers, veterans or otherwise. He found work teaching at Marshall College in Wiley, Texas; he and his wife moved there. Since the hospital near them in Texas was so unwelcoming in regard to Negro patients, he took his wife to her family home in West Virginia to have both of the children. After the Brown v. Board Supreme Court ruling in 1954, Bowman’s father was able to get a teaching job in the Des Moines system and the family moved north. Berea College graduate Gyude Moore, an aide to Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, will present his talk “Wired to Restore: A Perspective on Service” at a convocation at Berea College on Thursday, April 14.
This presentation is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Phelps Stokes Auditorium and is free and open to the public. This event is the 2010 Service Convocation, co-sponsored with Willis D. During the week of October 22 to 26, Berea College students Ethan Hamblin and Musa Jitmoud, along with Berea Campus Life Director Holli Hudson, traveled to Washington, D.C. for the Interfaith Leadership Institute (ILI).The students attended multiple conferences focused on spreading interfaith dialogue and initiatives across college campuses.
