Autumn Harvey, a junior majoring in history at Berea College, has been selected as a Newman Civic Fellow for 2021-2022 by Campus Compact, a Boston-based non-profit organization advancing the public purposes of higher education. Harvey joins 212 students from 39 states, Washington, D.C., and Mexico, to form the 2021 Newman Civic Fellow cohort.

College students and others interested in eliminating hunger will be urged to take action at the second annual Kentucky Hunger Dialogue on Saturday, September 30. Hosted by the Berea College Center for Excellence in Learning through Service (CELTS) and sponsored by Kentucky Campus Compact, the theme for this year’s Kentucky Hunger Dialogue is “Asset-Based Responses to Hunger.” The event will highlight successful programs already at work in our communities and present tools for engagement with hunger on three levels: emergency response, food systems, and policy change. Alongside non-profit and state agencies, students from colleges and universities across the commonwealth will spend the day networking, learning, and building coalitions. Partners for Education at Berea College has been awarded a $257,000 Upward Bound grant to serve students at Bell County High School in Pineville, Kentucky. The grant, funded by the United States Department of Education, will provide 60 students in grades 9-12 with year-round academic support, enhanced learning opportunities and college and career readiness preparation. Annual Hunger Hurts Food Drive, coordinated by Berea College’s Center for Excellence in Learning through Service (CELTS), in collaboration with Berea Faith Community Outreach (BFCO), will run from October 22 to 29, 2016.
Beginning on October 22nd, volunteers will distribute brown paper bags, donated by Kroger, to local households. Community members can help by filling the bags with non-perishable food and toiletry items and placing them near their front door by 9 a.m. on October 29th, for volunteers to pick up. These pipelines are intended to seamlessly link effective programs, services and supports to help achieve a set of 10 results by making improvements on 15 associated indicators that span the lives of young people.
