Partners for Education at Berea College has been awarded two Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) grants worth a combined $109,177,600 to serve students in Appalachian Kentucky. The United States Department of Education grants will provide 19,496 students in 19 counties with an array of services aligned to accomplish four overarching goals: lift educational aspirations, build academic skills, connect academics to college and career, and engage parents as partners. Since its founding in 1855, Berea College has been dedicated to Appalachia, not only educating students from the region but also providing outreach services. This commitment has always extended beyond the borders of campus, and with four new grants from the U.S. Department of Education, the College will make a significantly larger impact on education in the neighboring region. In fact, the educational systems in some 17 southeastern Kentucky counties will receive comprehensive educational support for children, teens and parents through programs administered by the College. Gentry Appears on KET’s ‘Education Matters,’ Nov. 18
Dreama Gentry, director of Berea College’s Partners for Education program (which includes GEAR-UP and Promise Neighborhoods) will appear on Kentucky Educational Television’s (KET) series “Education Matters,” Monday, November 18 at 9 p.m. Hosted by Bill Goodman and special co-host Renee Shaw, this special edition of “Education Matters, “part of a continuing KET series, explores this important issue and examines what Kentucky schools and communities in high-poverty areas have done to help all students reach their academic potential. The program includes an interview clip with Ron Crouch, director of research and statistics for the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet, and with Bruce Lesley, president of the national child advocacy group First Focus; and video visits to May Valley Elementary in Floyd County, Fern Creek High School in Jefferson County and the Neighborhood House in Louisville. Gentry honored by Council on Postsecondary Education
Dreama Gentry, director of the Partners for Education program at Berea College, was awarded the prestigious Oak Award from the Council on Postsecondary Education on September 13.
For nearly 20 years, she has supported college access efforts in central Kentucky through her grant-writing efforts, including the recent $75 million GEAR UP grant that supports efforts to increase college attainment in low-income and rural communities. “Colonels for Education” Promotes College-Going and National GEAR UP Week
Eastern Kentucky University’s Manchester campus hosted more than 400 middle schoolers from Clay and Owsley counties on September 13 for a question-and-answer session with college athletes. The “Colonels for Education” event was a collaboration between Berea College’s GEAR UP program, Eastern Kentucky University, and Clay and Owsley County school districts. 5,000 Eighth Graders Begin Their Journey to College
Eighth grade students from across southeastern Kentucky will gather at the Corbin Arena on Wednesday, August 29, for a two-hour college readiness kick-off. Members of the Class of 2017 will celebrate the start of GEAR UP and Berea CFES Scholars programs in their schools. College presidents will show their support through motivational videos, and Berea College President Dr. Lyle Roelofs will welcome the students to the programs. Kentucky Department of Juvenile Justice Commissioner Hasan Davis will advise students that adversity can be overcome through hard work and strength of spirit. There will be musical performances by the Hall Pass Tour and Chad Warrix. Students will have the opportunity to meet their 2017 classmates from other schools participating in two national GEAR UP grant programs being implemented by Berea College. Grants Help Berea College and Secondary School Students GEAR UP for College
Berea College has been awarded two Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) grants from the U.S. Department of Education totaling nearly $10.7 million annually to focus teachers, administrators, parents and secondary school students on preparing for success in post-secondary education. The grants will fund two programs (GEAR UP Appalachia! and Promise Neighborhood GEAR UP) that serve elementary and middle school students in 17 central and southeastern Kentucky counties, a dozen of which are among the poorest in the nation.
