President Lyle Roelofs today announced that Berea College will make substantial funds available to eastern Kentucky counties impacted by last month’s devastating flooding. The flooding affected 8,000 residents in the region.

Save the Children, StriveTogether, Partners for Education at Berea College and the Annie E. Casey Foundation focus on improving outcomes for children through $1.2 million Rural Accelerator Initiative
Save the Children, which works in rural communities across the United States where child poverty rates are high and resources are low, has joined forces with StriveTogether, Partners for Education at Berea College and the Annie E. Casey Foundation to develop and launch a first-of-its-kind collective impact effort for rural America. Designed to address complex social issues through a collaborative approach adapted to the unique needs and interests of rural communities, the effort has kicked off in three pilot communities – Perry County, Ky.; Whitley County, Ky.; and Cocke County, Tenn. – with the goal of improving children’s lives from cradle to career.

Education is Key to the Future of Eastern Kentucky

Dreama Gentry, executive director of Partners for Education at Berea College, recently spoke with WEKU’s Tom Martin about prominent educational challenges facing rural Appalachia and the Rural College Access and Success Summit planned for April 28-30 in Lexington, Ky. Gentry and Martin also discussed the work Partners for Education does in the region to provide college readiness programming for young students.
“We get paralyzed as a community into inaction because it often seems insurmountable to think about how we revitalize this region, but we have to do something and continue to do something,” said Gentry, when talking about the work Partners for Education does in addressing educational access in its service area.
Gentry also discussed the upcoming Rural College Access and Success Summit, hosted by Partners for Education. The Summit provides an opportunity for practitioners and people who believe in college access to highlight best practices and the unique challenges of increasing opportunities in rural America. Among the keynote speakers highlighted for this year’s Summit is John King, who served as Secretary of Education under the Obama administration.

Seven Organizations Named as Hubs for Results Count™ Leadership Development
In a major step to boost the reach of Results Count™, its unique approach to leadership development, the Casey Foundation has selected seven organizations to work with the Foundation for three years as hubs that will expand the use of Results Count throughout the social sector.
The goal: to increase the number of leaders who take a results-oriented approach to accelerate measurable and equitable improvements in well-being for children and families in communities across the country. $109 Million in Grants for New Berea College GEAR UP Programs to Assist Area Families
Partners for Education at Berea College has been awarded two Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) grants worth a combined $109,177,600 to serve students in Appalachian Kentucky. The United States Department of Education grants will provide 19,496 students in 19 counties with an array of services aligned to accomplish four overarching goals: lift educational aspirations, build academic skills, connect academics to college and career, and engage parents as partners. Dr. Jill Biden to Speak at Rural College Access and Success Summit

Partners for Education at Berea College will host the 2018 Rural College Access and Success Summit. The keynote speaker, Dr. Jill Biden, EdD, Board Chair of Save the Children US, will address the need to prepare students of all ages for academic and life success.
The Summit will bring together educators, legislators, non-profit leaders and many others to share ideas and strategies for ensuring that rural youth have the resources to successfully transition from high school to college and career. During the Summit, participants will explore best practices and highlight the unique opportunities to be found in rural America. The event will be held May 13-15 in Lexington, Kentucky. Promise Neighborhood Brings $30 Million to Support Education
A $30 million Promise Neighborhood grant to serve Perry County in eastern Kentucky has been awarded to Partners for Education at Berea College. The five-year grant will provide children and youth in the community with comprehensive services and school supports and is aimed at improving outcomes for all students and their families.
Project Director Michael Hughes, a lifelong Perry County resident, has spent much of his career as a teacher and administrator. Grant Funds Educational Opportunities for Bell County Students
Partners for Education at Berea College has been awarded a $257,000 Upward Bound grant to serve students at Bell County High School in Pineville, Kentucky. The grant, funded by the United States Department of Education, will provide 60 students in grades 9-12 with year-round academic support, enhanced learning opportunities and college and career readiness preparation. Partners for education program awarded Americorps Grant
Partners for Education at Berea College has been selected by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) as a recipient of an AmeriCorps grant. Partners for Education’s program, PartnerCorps: STEM, will increase student competency in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or “STEM” fields. Partners for Education will place 20 AmeriCorps members in three Madison County high schools: Berea Independent, Madison Central, and Madison Southern. PartnerCorps: STEM members will mentor high school students, provide in-school and out-of-school tutoring to students taking algebra courses while connecting the math to STEM careers. Aspen Institute Names Partners for Education at Berea College to National Network to Disrupt Poverty for Children and Parents
Partners for Education at Berea College was announced today as a member of the Aspen Institute Ascend Network, a new network of leading organizations using two-generation approaches to disrupt poverty and create economic mobility for families. Partners for Education at Berea College is one of the initial 58 organizations, selected from 24 states and the District of Columbia, that represent the leading edge of a national movement around two-generation approaches. Berea College’s Partners for Education and CMT Inspire Students to Continue Their Educations
More than 200 parents and students from eastern Kentucky gathered in Berea, Kentucky, on October 26 to explore educational opportunities and develop their own Map to Success, a program Berea designed to introduce families of high school students to college and career planning. The event marked the first joint effort between Partners for Education at Berea College and CMT Empowering Education, CMT’s initiative challenging viewers to pursue post-secondary education. CMT has recruited some of music’s biggest names to motivate and inspire viewers with their own education stories, including Carrie Underwood, Dierks Bentley, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan. Gentry Appears on KET’s ‘Education Matters,’ Nov. 18
Dreama Gentry, director of Berea College’s Partners for Education program (which includes GEAR-UP and Promise Neighborhoods) will appear on Kentucky Educational Television’s (KET) series “Education Matters,” Monday, November 18 at 9 p.m. Hosted by Bill Goodman and special co-host Renee Shaw, this special edition of “Education Matters, “part of a continuing KET series, explores this important issue and examines what Kentucky schools and communities in high-poverty areas have done to help all students reach their academic potential. The program includes an interview clip with Ron Crouch, director of research and statistics for the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet, and with Bruce Lesley, president of the national child advocacy group First Focus; and video visits to May Valley Elementary in Floyd County, Fern Creek High School in Jefferson County and the Neighborhood House in Louisville. Gentry honored by Council on Postsecondary Education
Dreama Gentry, director of the Partners for Education program at Berea College, was awarded the prestigious Oak Award from the Council on Postsecondary Education on September 13.
For nearly 20 years, she has supported college access efforts in central Kentucky through her grant-writing efforts, including the recent $75 million GEAR UP grant that supports efforts to increase college attainment in low-income and rural communities.
