The winners of this year’s Weatherford Awards for the best books about Appalachia are Appalachian Reckoning (non-fiction) edited by Anthony Harkins and Meredith McCarroll, Forage by Rose McLarney (poetry), and Any Other Place (fiction) by Michael Croley. The Weatherford Awards honor books deemed as best illuminating the challenges, personalities and unique qualities of the Appalachian South. Granted by Berea College and the Appalachian Studies Association for 50 years, the awards commemorate the life and achievements of W.D. Weatherford, Sr., a pioneer and leading figure in Appalachian development, youth work and race relations, and his son, Willis D. Weatherford, Jr., Berea College’s sixth President. These winning authors will be recognized at the 2020 Appalachian Studies Conference in Lexington, Kentucky on Friday, March 13.

Nikki Giovanni Speaks at Berea College
Internationally renowned author Nikki Giovanni will read her poetry Friday evening, November 16, at an event that is free and open to the public. The occasion is the celebration of the Fall 2012 issue of Appalachian Heritage. Giovanni was the featured author for this issue. The celebration will begin with a reception at 7:30 p.m. Giovanni will read at 8. The venue is the Appalachian Center Gallery, 205 North Main Street in Berea on the Berea College campus. Berea’s Final Fall Convocation Features Poetry and Blues
Glenis Redmond, an award-winning poet, and veteran blues musician Scott Ainslie will perform at a Berea College convocation on December 1 at 3 p.m. in Phelps Stokes Auditorium. Their performance “Southern Voices: Black, White and the Blues” intertwines Redmond’s powerful spoken-word poetry with Ainslie’s soulfully melodic music in its celebration of American diversity and African roots. Ainslie will perform these pieces on vintage instruments, showcasing an historically accurate adaptation of the American blues. The public is invited to celebrate the Fall 2011 issue of “Appalachian Heritage” on Friday, November 4, at Berea College’s Loyal Jones Appalachian Center at 205 North Main Street in Berea, Kentucky. The featured author for this issue of the magazine, Frank X Walker, is the featured reader for the event.
