Berea College Alums Produce Scholarship Performance

Berea College alumni and former College staff members are performing in “Noel and Reb,” the final play at Berea Arena Theater. The play, a comedy by Paul Nelson Power ’58, is being performed as a tribute to Power’s widow, Barbara Byrd Power ’56.

“The proceeds go to the Paul Nelson Power Scholarship at Berea College in memory of this legendary professor, author and director,” said Eddie Kennedy ’68, who is the founder and producer of Berea Arena Theater. “The scholarship was established in 1998 by students, friends and family to honor his boundless energy and enthusiasm for theatre.”

Berea College Welcomes Public to 2018 Opening Convocation

hillbilly Documentary Film to Debut, Berea College Faculty Featured

hillbilly documentary posterhillbilly, a new documentary film that explores the historical basis of cultural stereotypes about people from Appalachia in film and television, is scheduled to make its worldwide debut at the Nashville Film Festival on May 19, 2018.

The film’s two directors, Ashley York and Sally Rubin, both with Appalachian roots, interviewed Berea faculty, including Chad Berry, bell hooks and Silas House. Other Bereans connected with the film are musician and alumnus Sam Gleaves, who was interviewed and contributed music, and Sam Cole, who is the associate producer. Reynolds Named Dean of the Chapel at Berea College

Loretta ReynoldsDr. Loretta Reynolds has been appointed as Dean of the Chapel at Berea College.

Reverend Reynolds’ experience in the work and mission of Berea College began in 1998. Since then, she has served as Title IX coordinator, a member of the Residence Life Team, a professor in General Studies and, most recently, as senior College chaplain and interim director of the Campus Christian Center. Reynolds is trained in first responder emergency pastoral care and in brief pastoral counseling, and she is also a Berea College Green Dot trainer. President’s Medallion Presented to Carl Thomas ’78 and Deborah Byrd Thomas ’80

Carl and Deborah Thomas with Lyle RoelofsBerea College President Lyle Roelofs presented Carl Thomas ‘78 and his wife, Deborah Byrd Thomas ’80, with the President’s Medallion at a surprise ceremony during the College’s 2017 Homecoming Weekend on Saturday, November 18.

Established in 1988 by then-President John B. Stephenson, the award is given at the discretion of the President to honor those who have shown “exemplary service in the advancement of Berea College and its cause.” Together, the Thomases are the 16th recipients of the President’s Medallion. Berea College Employees Hit the Road for 2017 Civil Rights Seminar and Tour

Last week, 40 Berea College faculty and staff members embarked on the biennial Civil Rights Seminar and Tour sponsored by the Carter G. Woodson Center for Interracial Education. The tour visited many locations significant to the American Civil Rights movement of the 1960s.  It also presented opportunities for faculty and staff to discuss a variety of topics related to race in America that are still relevant today. The idea of viewing race relations through the lens of a reparations paradigm versus a reconciliation paradigm was a consistent theme in these discussions throughout the trip. Berea College staff, faculty and students organized a series of events in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, on Monday, January 16, 2017, including a convocation featuring Dr. Karsonya Whitehead, from Loyola University Maryland, as speaker. The day’s activities were co-sponsored by Office of the President, Berea College Music Program, Black Cultural Center, Carter G. Woodson Center for Interracial Education, Center for Excellence in Learning through Service (CELTS), Berea College Music Program, First Christian Church, Union Church, and Willis D. Beautiful Weather for 141st Mountain Day

The first Mountain Day at Berea College was observed in 1875 for “enjoying the Fall colors and other natural wonders in the immediate vicinity and to provide a campus holiday free of classes and non-essential labor.”  It has become an annual tradition. In recent years groups, such as the Berea College Choir, sing to greet the rising of the sun after a morning hike. Mountain Day activities included climbing the Pinnacles, kettle corn, face-painting, winning prizes from various campus organizations and clubs, and dying t-shirts! Musical and dancing performances by campus student groups such as the Black Music Ensemble and the Berea College Country Dancers during the lunch hour drew a large crowd. This year marked the 141st year celebrating Mountain Day at Berea College.
