Berea College students Maria Alejandra Hernandez Diaz ’22 and Hunter McDavid ’22 have been named Thomas J. Watson Fellows.
The 54th Class of Watson Fellows was selected from just 41 private colleges and university partners across the United States. This year, 42 students were selected from a national pool of finalists in an extremely competitive process.

Dr. Channell Barbour
Berea College President Lyle Roelofs appointed Channell Barbour as vice president for Student Life. Barbour, who is currently serving as associate dean of Student Life, will replace Virgil Burnside upon his retirement June 30.
“As vice president for Student Life, Dr. Barbour will serve on the Administrative Committee and be an officer of the College,” Roelofs said. “I want to thank her for being willing to take on this important responsibility, and I look forward to working with her in the leadership of Berea College.”

Three Berea College alumni will be recognized with special awards during this year’s Summer Reunion. The Rodney C. Bussey Award of Special Merit will be presented to Virgil Burnside ’74 and Jackie Grisby Burnside ’74. The Berea Alumni Loyalty Award will be presented to Peter S. Thoms ’55. These three alumni will be celebrated during the Alumni Awards Presentation and Reception at 10 a.m., Sat., June 15 in the Boone Tavern Event Center. In the Spring of 2012, EKU Junior Zachery Thompson interned in the Public Relations Office at Berea College. He compared the student life experience at Eastern Kentucky University — a large public university (over 17,000 students) with the student life experience at Berea College, a small, private liberal arts college with well under 1,700 students, all of whom receive full tuition scholarships for four years.
