Three Alumni to be Recognized for Outstanding Contributions

Three Berea College alumni will be recognized with special awards during this year’s Summer Reunion. The Rodney C. Bussey Award of Special Merit will be presented to Virgil Burnside ’74 and Jackie Grisby Burnside ’74. The Berea Alumni Loyalty Award will be presented to Peter S. Thoms ’55. These three alumni will be celebrated during the Alumni Awards Presentation and Reception at 10 a.m., Sat., June 15 in the Boone Tavern Event Center. Each year the Berea College Alumni Association recognizes achievements of alumni with considerations given to professional accomplishments and service to their alma mater.

Berea College Awards Three Alumni with Special Recognition

Three Berea College alumni received awards during the College’s recent Summer Reunion. Awardees include Larry Woods, Alumni Loyalty Award; Robert Auerbach, Distinguished Alumnus Award; and Ann Beard Grundy, Distinguished Alumna Award.

Woods, a 1975 alumnus of Berea’s agriculture program, actively serves his Alma Mater in various capacities. He held terms on Berea’s Alumni Executive Council for seven years and is a past president of the Council. Woods was class reunion chair for his 35th and 40th reunions at Berea. Alumni Reminisce and Reconnect at Summer Reunion 2016

Laughs at picnicNearly 500 alumni from far and wide gathered this past weekend at the annual Berea College Summer Reunion.

The weekend’s festivities began with a reception for members of the Great Commitments Society, which recognizes alumni who have included Berea College in their estate plans to help the College carry out its Great Commitments. Alums To Gather, Three Bereans To Receive Special Recognition

The annual Berea College Summer Reunion will take place June 10–12, 2016. Alumni celebrating special reunions include the classes of 1946, 1951, 1956, 1961, 1966, 1971, 1976, 1981 and 1986.

Three individuals will be recognized with special awards at a ceremony on Saturday, June 11, at 10:30 a.m. in Baird Lounge in the Alumni Building. Dr. Miles Hayes ’57 will be presented the Distinguished Alumni Award. Janie Adams Frazier ’72 will receive the Alumni Loyalty Award, and Fred Baker will be presented with an Honorary Alumnus Award. Sailors Still Making a Difference

Eleven V-12/V-5 alumni attended the 2010 reunion at Berea College. The World War II-era U.S. Navy training program at Berea offered preliminary training to officer candidates from July 1943 to October 1945. Distinguished Alumnus Award

When Sumit Ganguly arrived at Berea College in 1973, he decided to major in English. However, thanks to the influence of Professor Gary Sykes, he picked political science as a second major, a decision that shaped much of his professional career. Berea College honors “distinguished” and “honorary” alumni during Summer Reunion

During Berea College’s summer reunion in June three alumni and one honorary alumnus were honored by the college.

Terry Lee Allebaugh, ‘81, a long-time advocate for providing services to the homeless, and Dr. Wallace Campbell, ‘66, a former dean at Alice Lloyd College and Pikeville College, received Distinguished Alumni awards for their notable accomplishments after graduating from Berea. Frances Rogers, ‘66, received the Alumni Loyalty award for being a loyal financial supporter and ambassador for the college. Retired music professor Robert J. Lewis received the Honorary Alumnus award for his dedication to teaching students at Berea for more than 50 years.
