The James Watt Raine Memorial Play

Established in memory of Dr. Raine who was chair of the department of English and Theatre from 1906 – 1939, this fund was created in 1987. He loved theatre and was a master of teaching and writing. Dr. Raine directed and produced literally hundreds of plays in the old Tabernacle, the college building which stood on the site of the current Jelkyl Drama Center. There was no money to support productions at that time.

The Athur Flandreau Memorial Drama Fund

The Athur Flandreau Memorial Drama Fund was created in 1980 in memory of Arthur Flandreau, Associate Professor of Library Sciences and Head Librarian of the Hutchins Library from 1974 – 1979. Alfred and Jean Perrin, distinguished friends of the Library, the Theatre Laboratory, and Appalachian Center, established the Fund.

The Arronson Theatre Lectureship

The Arronson Theatre Lectureship program was conceived in 1987 and fully funded in 1989. The initial gift came from the Arronson Foundation, established by Mrs. Gertrude Arronson in 1957. The Arronson Foundation required that its gift be matched by Berea College and this was assisted through a bequest from the estate of the American playwright and author Thornton Wilder.

Paul Power Scholarship

Established to honor the late Paul Power who, for twenty-one years was a vital part of the drama program at Berea College, this scholarship is awarded annually to a student to study or work in the area of theatre. “Mr. P” will be remembered for his Summer Repertory Theater, giving the town and surrounding area five shows each week, as well as the Henrietta Child Children’s Theater which played to thousands of children each Sunday evening during the summer. He taught drama, speech and humanities, and directed many productions at the old Tab, and helped to plan the new Jelkyl drama building. This endowed scholarship was conceived and developed by Paul’s former students who want to ensure that Paul’s love and devotion for the theater will be carried on.
