Aaron-Sachs_small“…My time in the Foreign Languages Department definitely impacted my life and career. Since leaving Berea, I’ve made an effort to be involved in international and intercultural arenas. At Rackspace, I get to use my German (and some of my French) with our customers from German and French-speaking countries.”

–Aaron Sachs, German & Speech Communications major, ’09
Linux Systems Administrator for Rackspace Hosting (May 2015)

Kiril-Traykov“My training in German was the deciding factor for getting my first job after graduation. I had applied to Hewlett-Packard and my resume was selected because the company wanted to staff a specialist on a German account with appropriate language skills. I got the job and benefited a lot because I skipped the entry-level stage and directly went to a specialist role because of the business need. Knowing a foreign language can differentiate you in the workforce and expedite your progress.”

–Kiril Traykov, Economics & Mathematics major, German minor, ’06
Strategy and Business Intelligence Manager, Heineken USA (May 2015)

Bo-Bashkov_small“I have always had a soft spot in my heart for foreign languages. Over the past few years I have developed a new passion–psychometrics and educational research. However, the two are not mutually exclusive. For example, a couple of years ago I did a summer internship at the Center for Applied Linguistics in Washington, D.C., where I applied my educational measurement skills to study the operationalization of the four language modalities (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) in the most common assessment of English for ELLs in K-12 education in the U.S. I hope to get more opportunities to draw on my experience in both fields in the future. “
