The celebration begins with another tradition on “Mountain Day Eve” concert by the Berea College Wind and Jazz Ensembles on Tuesday, Oct. 14. They will perform in Gray Auditorium (located in Presser Hall) at 7:30 p.m.  Admission is free.

Also on Mountain Day Eve, overnight camping will take place beginning at 6:00p.m. at Brushy Fork (weather permitting). Please note that no camping is permitted at the mountain.

On Wednesday, students, staff, faculty, and alumni are encouraged to hike “the mountain” for the sunrise.  The Sunrise Hike Celebration includes the Berea College Concert Choir and the Berea College Country Dancers. Shuttles out to the mountains will leave campus from Alumni Circle at 5:00 a.m.

This year’s Mountain Day activities, which are sponsored by the Berea College Campus Life office, include games, music, performances, and contests from 10:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. and of course, hiking in the College forest all day. Performing groups include: Berea College Country Dancers; Folk Roots Ensemble; Swing Club; Artist in Modern Motion; African Student Association; Afro Latin Percussion Ensemble; Bluegrass Ensemble; EYCE and FYAH; Berea Middle Eastern Dance; Sazon Latino; Berea’s Got Talent Performers; Berea College Concert Choir; and Black Music Ensemble.

Shuttles out to the mountains and back will run from 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Lunch, provided by Berea College Food Service will be available from 11:00 a.m.—1:00 p.m. Lunch is open to all students, staff, faculty, alumni and their families.  All others can purchase lunch for a small fee.

At “the mountain” (College Forest on Ky. Hwy. 21) teams of students will compete in “pioneer games” that include cross-cut saw and log toss, tomahawk throwing, archery, horseshoes, and corn hole.  A variety of other activities and food for children and adults are offered at Indian Fort from 11:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. including a rock climbing wall sponsored by Thrive!, inflatables, Kettle Korn, and many more.

Berea College, the first interracial and coeducational college in the South, focuses on learning, labor and service. The College only admits academically promising students with limited financial resources—primarily from Kentucky and Appalachia—but welcomes students from 41 states and 76 countries. Every Berea student receives a Tuition Promise Scholarship, which means no Berea student pays for tuition. Berea is one of nine federally recognized Work Colleges, so students work 10 hours or more weekly to earn money for books, housing and meals. The College’s motto, “God has made of one blood all peoples of the earth,” speaks to its inclusive Christian character.
