Berea College Joins New Collegiate Conference of the South Following USA South Separation

Nine member institutions of the USA South Athletic Conference (USAS) have officially formed and have been approved by the NCAA as a new Division III athletic conference, following a planned separation of USAS. This new conference, the “Collegiate Conference of the South” (CCS), will include Agnes Scott College, Belhaven University, Berea College, Covenant College, Huntingdon College, LaGrange College, Maryville College, Piedmont University, and Wesleyan College.

Men’s Cross Country Team Receives At-Large Bid to NCAA DIII National Championship

The Berea College men’s cross country team earned one of the 16 at-large bids to go to the NCAA DIII National Championship on Saturday, Nov. 17. The announcement by the NCAA Division III Men’s and Women’s Track and Field and Cross Country Committee came on the heels of a third-place finish by Berea’s men’s team in the south/southeast region this past weekend and senior Logan McKenzie winning the region. Berea Names Gym After Dr. Joy Hager

Dedication of the Dr. Joy Hager Gymnasium, recognizing 49 years of service.The Dr. Joy Hager Gymnasium will be dedicated at a naming ceremony on Thursday, Nov. 1, to memorialize her commitment and leadership during her 49 years of service to Berea College. Berea Wins Division, Earns Top Seed in Conference Tournament

With a 12-2 conference record (21-3 overall), the Berea College women’s basketball team won the USA South West Division to earn a first-round bye and home-court advantage in the conference tournament that began on Wednesday, February 14. The USA South Tournament consists of the top six teams from each division in the conference. Berea will host a quarterfinal game against fifth seed Covenant College (8-6, conference; 14-11, overall) at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Seabury Center on the Berea campus. Berea to Host Fourth Annual “Green” Basketball Game and EcoChallenge

Berea College Basketball Players at the Green Game 2017For the fourth consecutive year, Berea College will host the Carbon Neutral Basketball “Green” Game on Feb. 7 to bring awareness to the responsibility higher-education institutions have to help reduce global carbon emissions.

Following the Green Game, the Sustainability Office staff will calculate the total carbon emissions emitted from the energy used in Seabury Center Gym during the home game, plus emissions from the opposing team’s transportation. This calculation will determine the number of trees volunteers and staff must plant later in the spring to offset the carbon put into the atmosphere during this basketball game. Berea College Welcomed Into USA South Athletic Conference

Berea College comes to USA South as a full NCAA Division III member and is eligible to compete in all USA South championships and Berea’s student athletes are now eligible to receive any Conference-awarded academic and/or sportsmanship honors. Berea College Set to Join USA South

The USA South Athletic Conference has announced that Berea College has been accepted to begin the process of full membership within the Conference. Lady Mountaineer Candy Walls, ’09 ended her basketball career with a bang. The Stanton, Kentucky native appears in the top 20 NAIA Division II women’s basketball records in six categories. She holds the highest point average per game (26.21) and most three-point goals averaged per game (3.82). She was national player of the week twice and received Honorable Mention All-American honors. Hornsby and Turner Join the 1000 Point Club

Cody Hornsby, ’09, and Mikah Turner, ’10, joined the elite 1000 Point Club, both having scored more than 1000 points during their Berea College basketball careers. Mikah led the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with an average of 20.36 points per game. His career game highs are 35 points; 5 assists; 14 rebounds; and 4 steals. Hornsby’s career game highs are: 28 points; 7 assists; 7 rebounds; and 4 steals.

New Men’s Basketball Coach Chosen

John Hemenway was recently named the new men’s basketball coach at Berea College.

Hemenway began as assistant coach at the University of South Dakota, where he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. He followed with five years as head coach of the Dakota Wesleyan University Tigers in Mitchell, South Dakota. Continue reading New Men’s Basketball Coach Chosen

“Colonels for Education” Promotes College-Going and National GEAR UP Week

Eastern Kentucky University’s Manchester campus hosted more than 400 middle schoolers from Clay and Owsley counties on September 13 for a question-and-answer session with college athletes. The “Colonels for Education” event was a collaboration between Berea College’s GEAR UP program, Eastern Kentucky University, and Clay and Owsley County school districts.
