The annual Berea College Service Convocation and presentation of the 2017 Berea College Service Awards will take place this Thursday, March 23 at 3:00 p.m. in Phelps Stokes Chapel. Following the presentation of the 2017 Berea College Service Awards to Ms. Lynda Whitt and Ms. Odessa Woolfolk, three Berea College graduates will engage in a panel discussion, titled, “Careers in Defending Human Rights in Kentucky: Perspectives of three Berea College graduates.” The panelists include Rashaad Abdur-Rahman, Christian Motley, and Cara Stewart. Carlos Núñez to Present Celtic Music with Latin Passion at Berea Convocation

Berea College welcomes the public and campus community to this week’s convocation featuring Carlos Núñez, whom the BBC describes as “…inventive, brilliant, progressive minded and a great showman to boot.” Núñez is known as the world’s most famous player of the gaita, the bagpipes of his native Galicia, Spain’s northwest, Atlantic Ocean-abutting region rich in vibrant, expressive Celtic traditional music. Sissoko & Segal Blend Baroque and West African Music
Berea College welcomes the public and campus community to this week’s convocation featuring Ballaké Sissoko & Vincent Ségal who collaborate to create hybrid chamber music. Willie James Parker, M.D., a 1986 graduate of Berea College will speak this week on Thursday, November 10, at 3:00pm in Phelps Stokes Chapel on the Berea College campus. Christmas Country Dance School: A Great Way to Spend the Holidays!
Spend part of your holiday season at a cozy event dedicated to fun, music, friendship, learning, sharing, and dance, a celebration of individual creativity within community in a supportive atmosphere. Christmas Country Dance School at Berea College provides a safe and festive environment to try something new, participate in ancient traditions, and forge some new traditions. Have you admired storytellers, musicians, basket-makers, or cloggers? Would you like to learn to waltz or play music for dances? You, too, can learn these folk skills and meet a wide variety of fascinating people who love to share these activities. Starting in 1938 as a training ground for dance leaders, CCDS has become a much loved tradition mixing youth (age 13 or older) and adults, beginner and experienced, with local, national, and international staff and participants. Beautiful Weather for 141st Mountain Day
The first Mountain Day at Berea College was observed in 1875 for “enjoying the Fall colors and other natural wonders in the immediate vicinity and to provide a campus holiday free of classes and non-essential labor.” It has become an annual tradition. In recent years groups, such as the Berea College Choir, sing to greet the rising of the sun after a morning hike. Mountain Day activities included climbing the Pinnacles, kettle corn, face-painting, winning prizes from various campus organizations and clubs, and dying t-shirts! Musical and dancing performances by campus student groups such as the Black Music Ensemble and the Berea College Country Dancers during the lunch hour drew a large crowd. This year marked the 141st year celebrating Mountain Day at Berea College.
Dr. John Hibbing on Liberals and Conservatives Coexisting
Dr. John Hibbing, a Political Science professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, will speak at Berea College on October 27, 2016, at 3:00pm in Phelps Stokes Chapel. Hibbing will discuss recent research on deep differences across the political spectrum, as well as understanding some distinctions that might pave the way for a less polarized political system. Stephen Bright, Professor at Yale Law School and president of the Southern Center for Human Rights, will speak at Berea College October 20, 2016, at 3:00pm, in Phelps Stokes Chapel. From debtors’ prisons to the death penalty, race and poverty influence outcomes in U.S. Criminal Courts. Bright’s remarks will examine how sentences imposed by courts can destroy people and communities and he will chart hope for the future. This event is free and open to the public. Berea College welcomes the public and campus community to this week’s convocation featuring Dr. Julie Robinson, NASA Chief Scientist for the International Space Station (ISS). In this convocation, the Berea College Science Lecture, Dr. Robinson will highlight how the International Space Station is providing many beneficial discoveries across fields as diverse as astrophysics, nanomaterials, combustion, microbiology, and human physiology. Robinson also will explain how scientists and engineers can access the research ISS facility. BEREA, KY (September 2, 2016) – The Appalachian Food Summit will open with a free soup beans and cornbread supper at The Loyal Jones Center at Berea College September 16 from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. The event, the first John Egerton Cornbread Convocation honors the generosity and inclusiveness of the late social justice activist, Southern food writer and Kentucky-born historian, John Egerton. Gyude Moore, a 2006 graduate of Berea College, will be the speaker at this year’s Service Convocation, March 24 at 3:00 p.m., in Phelps Stokes Chapel. Moore, who was a political science major at Berea, now is the Minister of Public Works in the administration of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf in his home country, the Republic of Liberia. Berea College Welcomes Public to Della Mae
Vibrant Sounds Honoring the Roots

Berea College welcomes the public and campus community to Vibrant Sounds Honoring the Roots. This program will feature Grammy- nominated music group Della Mae who recently performed on A Prairie Home Companion. This convocation is a part of the Stephenson Memorial Concert Series and is free and open to the public. Thursday, March 17, 2016, at 8:00 p.m. in Phelps Stokes Chapel.
Featuring five female instrumentalists/vocalists, the group formed in 2009, built a fan base with the release of their first album, I Built This Heart, in 2011 and broke through with the release of their 2013 Grammy-nominated album, This World Oft Can Be. In 2015, Della Mae released their self-titled third album.
According to The Bluegrass Situation, “The praise was effusive even before Della Mae was released… The Boston Globe called the album masterful. The New York Times said it showed a leap in confidence. One of the band’s better-known fans, Ed Helms, wrote in the liner notes that the collection of songs stirred his soul and lifted his spirit.”
The convocation events, which are provided to both the campus and public communities, are a significant part of a student’s educational experience at Berea College. Berea, the South’s first interracial and coeducational college, focuses on learning, labor and service. Berea admits academically promising students, primarily from Appalachia, who have limited economic resources. No student is charged tuition. All students must work at least 10 hours weekly, earning money for books, room and board. Graduates from Berea go on to distinguish themselves and the College in many fields, living out the College’s scriptural motto “God has made of one blood all peoples of the earth (Acts 17:26).“
