At its meeting held today (July 25, 2017), the Council of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) unanimously approved the appointment of Professor Rocky S. Tuan, an eminent biomedical scientist, as the eighth Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK. Tuan, a 1972 alumnus of Berea College (Berea, KY), was selected to serve a period of six years beginning January 1, 2018—succeeding Professor Joseph J.Y. Sung who steps down then to resume his position as Professor of Medicine and Therapeutics, the Faculty of Medicine, CUHK. Continue reading Berean Rocky S. Willie Parker, M.D. to Speak at Berea College Convocation

Willie James Parker, M.D., a 1986 graduate of Berea College will speak this week on Thursday, November 10, at 3:00pm in Phelps Stokes Chapel on the Berea College campus. His address, titled Reproductive Justice in Christian Understanding: New Wine in Old Wine Skins, will focus on his Christian identity as a physician who performs abortions and who advocates for reproductive rights. The Healing Power of Our Own Bodies

A few years ago, Dr. Rocky Tuan, ’72, an expert in musculoskeletal systems and a pioneer in the field of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, was asked by doctors at Walter Reed Army Medical Center to help them study a problem affecting soldiers returning from combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. Wounds to their arms and legs weren’t healing properly. “People who have blast injuries have a very high incidence of heterotopic ossification,” says Rocky. ”Bone forms where it’s not supposed to form, particularly after amputation, and we wanted to know why.” The condition causes deformity and pain at the amputation site and makes wearing a prosthesis difficult. “The veteran population is a unique group to serve. Their history and experiences are so rich and talking to them is a real pleasure.”

It’s not surprising that Leslie Boyd Long, ’89, became an internal medicine doctor. She grew up with a hospital in the back of her house. Leslie was the only girl and youngest of four children on a farm outside Tollesboro, a small town in Lewis County, Kentucky.
