The Berea College Concert Choir and Chamber Singers, conducted by Dr. Stephen Bolster, will present their annual fall concerts in Gray Auditorium on November 2 at 8 p.m. and November 4 at 3 p.m. Convocation credit is available to Berea College students for either performance. The exciting Broadway musical Ragtime will take place in Gray Auditorium on July 6, 7, and 8. Berea Graduate Marty Edwards Performs Guitar Recital
Marty Edwards, a 2009 graduate of Berea College, will present a solo guitar recital on Saturday evening, March 31 at 8 p.m. in Gray Auditorium in the Presser Music Building on Berea’s campus. The program will feature music from the Suite in E Minor by Baroque composer Sylvius Leopold Weiss, and Bardenklange by 19th century composer Johann Kaspar Mertz, and contemporary guitar music by Ted Oliver, Frederic Hand, John W. Duarte, David Crittenden, and Jorge Morel. Mr. Edward’s wife, soprano Rebekah Edwards, also a recent graduate of Berea College, will join the guitarist on John W. Duarte’s Quiet Songs (1971). Berea College Choir Tours Appalachia
The Berea College (Ky.) Concert Choir is beginning its annual performance tour March 10 in Charleston, West Virginia. Their concert will begin at noon at the Charleston Marriott Town Center. Additional performances are on March 11 at 3 p.m. at Asbury Methodist Church in Harrisonburg, Va., on March 12 at 7 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Charlottesville, Va., and on March 13 at 8 p.m. at Front Royal Skyline High School. Sam Gleaves
The face of Sam Gleaves, ’14, lights up when he describes his new project. An Appalachian Studies major, he is well-known around campus for spirited performances on banjo with the Berea College Bluegrass Ensemble. He is currently focusing his passion and talent on documenting the work of mountain music’s old guard. When Academic Vice-President Chad Berry, former director of the Loyal Jones Appalachian Center, approached him about the project, Sam understood its relevance to his field of study and to the College’s commitment to Appalachia, and he immediately knew which musicians he wanted to work with. Glenis Redmond, an award-winning poet, and veteran blues musician Scott Ainslie will perform at a Berea College convocation on December 1 at 3 p.m. in Phelps Stokes Auditorium. Their performance “Southern Voices: Black, White and the Blues” intertwines Redmond’s powerful spoken-word poetry with Ainslie’s soulfully melodic music in its celebration of American diversity and African roots. Ainslie will perform these pieces on vintage instruments, showcasing an historically accurate adaptation of the American blues. Dr. Stephen Bolster
Dr. Stephen Bolster is the Mary W. McGaw Endowed Chair of Music at Berea College, where he has taught for 32 years. Professor of Music and Program Coordinator, he conducts the Concert Choir and Chamber Singers, and teaches voice, vocal methods, conducting, and music literature. He holds music degrees from Dartmouth College (A.B. Music, 1973), the University of North Carolina (M.M. Choral Arts, 1977), and the University of Colorado (D.M.A. Literature and Performance of Choral Music, 1980) and conducted major choral organizations at each school before joining the Berea faculty in 1980. Under his direction the Berea College Concert Choir and Chamber Singers have toured annually in the eastern United States, and have performed in several cities in China in 2007, in Italy and Switzerland in 2002, and in central and eastern Europe in 1994. The choirs have been featured in several Christmas specials for educational television, have performed multiple times for the Kentucky Music Educators Association State Conference, and have twice performed at the American Negro Spiritual Competition in Cincinnati’s famous Music Hall. Berea College Concert Choir Performs Fall Concerts on Oct. 22 & 23
The Berea College Concert Choir and Chamber Singers, conducted by Dr. Stephen Bolster, will present their annual fall concerts in Gray Auditorium on Saturday, October 22, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, October 23, at 3 p.m. Convocation credit is available to Berea College students for either performance. The public is invited to attend, and there is no charge for admission. The choirs will be accompanied by Lindsay Clavere on the piano, and her husband Javier Clavere, on the organ and the piano. Remembering 9/11
On Sept. 11: Bereans will observe the tenth anniversary of 9/11 by praying, serving and making music together.
Pray Together. At 2 p.m. in Danforth Chapel, Bereans will gather in a time of quiet reflection, sharing prayers, scriptures and words of lament and hope.
Make Music Together. At 3 p.m., music faculty and students will perform “Concert of Hope” in Gray Auditorium in Presser Hall. This concert reflects the importance and impact of music in times of trial and in expressing hope for the present and future. Each selection will represent a year of transition from devastation to healing and joy for the future and global healing.
Serve Together. All day, Bereans will have the opportunity to honor the victims and heroes of 9/11 by serving our neighbors. Collection boxes for the Berea Food Bank will be available throughout campus.
Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra
On September 15 at 8 p.m., the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra will perform a convocation in Phelps Stokes Auditorium. The seven-piece ensemble, led by the renowned artistic and musical director Dr. David N. Baker, will feature an eclectic medley of historic jazz pieces during their program “Making the History of Jazz Come Alive.” This Stephenson Memorial Concert is free and open to the public. The Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra (SJMO) was created in 1990 through Congressional funding to explore, present, promote and perpetuate the historical legacy of jazz as an American art form. It is the goal of the SJMO to enrich the public’s understanding of the character and importance of this unique American treasure by presenting significant jazz masterworks in engaging musical performances, and stimulating educational activities that are based on scholarship and research. Carillon Concert features Gordon Slater, July 4
Berea College’s Summer Carillon Concert on Monday, July 4 at 7:30 p.m., will feature Gordon Slater, retired Dominion Carillonneur of Canada who played the Peace Tower Carillon in Ottawa for 31 years.
Slater’s program will begin with “Suite XIV,” arranged by Berea’s founding carillonneur, the late John Courter. The concert will include the patriotic pieces “America the Beautiful,” You’re a Grand Old Flag” and “The Yankee Doodle Boy” all arranged by Slater.
