Application Process

One of the early Appalachian Fund grantees was the Frontier Nursing Service, whose nurse-midwives used Willys Jeeps to serve families in eastern Kentucky.

The Appalachian Fund’s Advisory Council reviews standard requests once a year. All funding requests for the 2024 grant period must be received by Monday, October 16, 2023. Applications received after this deadline will not be accepted.

Standard Application

The process is as follows:

  • If you have not received funding from the Berea College Appalachian Fund previously, please complete and submit the Grant Inquiry Form online prior to submitting an application. Davey King will follow up with you on your proposed project.
  • Complete the Grant Application (PDF Application and Word Application) along with the Budget (Excel budget) and email your proposal to Davey King at kingd3@berea.edu, by Monday, October 16, 2023.
  • Returning grantees: Submit your report (Report Requirements) on current grant by same deadline via email to kingd3@berea.edu. Your report must be submitted to be eligible to re-apply.
  • The Advisory Council will meet in December to review grant requests.
  • You will be notified by January whether your request was approved or denied.
  • Awarded funds will be paid in January. Larger grants are issued in two payments: one in January and one in July.

Folk Arts and Cultures Initiative

The Appalachian Fund is currently able to offer a special funding opportunity to support nonprofits that help celebrate and preserve folk arts and cultures of central Appalachia.

The process is as follows:

  • If you have not received funding from the Berea College Appalachian Fund previously, please fill out and submit the Grant Inquiry Form online prior to submitting an application. Davey King will follow up with you on your proposed project.
  • Complete the Grant Application (PDF Application and Word Application) along with the Budget (Excel budget) and email your proposal to Davey King at kingd3@berea.edu, by Tuesday, April 25, 2023.
  • Returning grantees: Submit your report (Report Requirements) on prior year grant by same deadline via email to kingd3@berea.edu.  Your report must be submitted to be eligible to re-apply.
  • The Advisory Council will meet in June to review grant requests.
  • You will be notified in June whether your request was approved or denied.
  • Awarded funds will be paid in July.
