Biography

Sam Cole is a proud native of Lee County, Kentucky. While a student at Berea College, she majored in Appalachian Studies (specifically regional literature), and worked for the College’s literary magazine, Appalachian Review. After graduating, Sam served as an AmeriCorps*VISTA for the Center for Excellence and Learning Through Services (CELTS), before becoming administrative assistant to the Chair of Academic Division II (currently Dr. Sarah Hall), then to the Associate Provost, Dr. Eileen McKiernan Gonzalez. She also served several years as a Title VII / IX co-investigator. Now, Sam serves the Provost, Dr. Scott Steele, as Executive Administrative Assistant.

Writing has always been a very important part of Sam’s life. She has had poems and stories published in several regional magazines and anthologies. She served as Associate Producer on the team which created the documentary hillbilly: Appalachia in Film and Television. Another project Sam served as lead on, Her Appalachia, was funded by the Kentucky Foundation for Women and tells the stories of Appalachian women from Eastern Kentucky and beyond while exploring media representations of Appalachian people. In Spring 2019, Sam joined the Board of Directors of the New Opportunity School for Women, a nonprofit which serves Appalachian women by helping them overcome barriers in their day to day lives via education and training. In her spare time, Sam enjoys Science Fiction, popular science writing, technology, computer science, reading, discovering new music and films, spending time outdoors, writing, crafts, and quality kitchen time.
