Beautiful Weather for 141st Mountain Day
The first Mountain Day at Berea College was observed in 1875 for “enjoying the Fall colors and other natural wonders in the immediate vicinity and to provide a campus holiday free of classes and non-essential labor.” It has become an annual tradition. In recent years groups, such as the Berea College Choir, sing to greet the rising of the sun after a morning hike. Mountain Day activities included climbing the Pinnacles, kettle corn, face-painting, winning prizes from various campus organizations and clubs, and dying t-shirts! Musical and dancing performances by campus student groups such as the Black Music Ensemble and the Berea College Country Dancers during the lunch hour drew a large crowd. This year marked the 141st year celebrating Mountain Day at Berea College.
Hispanic Outreach Project’s “HOP Talks” Shares Information about Current Issues and Culture
The Hispanic Outreach Project of Berea College is offering a series of educational presentations in which representatives from Kentucky-based organizations present about Latino issues and cultural topics. Hunger Hurts Food Drive Celebrates 24 Years of Giving Back to the Community
Annual Hunger Hurts Food Drive, coordinated by Berea College’s Center for Excellence in Learning through Service (CELTS), in collaboration with Berea Faith Community Outreach (BFCO), will run from October 22 to 29, 2016.
Beginning on October 22nd, volunteers will distribute brown paper bags, donated by Kroger, to local households. Community members can help by filling the bags with non-perishable food and toiletry items and placing them near their front door by 9 a.m. on October 29th, for volunteers to pick up. Roelofs Confirms Support for Student Rights and Title IX
Lately there has been considerable commentary regarding a Title IX case that was heard in the Spring of 2015. The discussion has proceeded mostly on social media, but I have received a number of emails on the matter and some faculty members report that the issue has come up in classes. Jean Ritchie’s Legacy Lives on Through Scholarship Program

The ‘Jean Ritchie MA Scholarship,’ named after the internationally known ballad singer, dulcimer player, and “Mother of Folk” music, has been awarded to Ethan Hamblin, a 2014 Berea College graduate.
Hamblin is the inaugural recipient of the Jean Ritchie MA Scholarship, which is awarded to an outstanding Berea College student who has decided to pursue their Master’s degree at National University of Ireland (NUI) Galway. Hamblin will receive a full-tuition scholarship, beginning in September, as he pursues his degree in Rural Sustainability. Student-only Space the Focus of ‘Ground Floor’ Alumni Building renovation
Previously called the “Corner Pocket” by many and now named the “Ground Floor,” the newly renovated space in the Alumni Building houses space just for students, including offices for Campus Activities Board and the Student Government Association, the two largest student organizations on campus.

Seven Berea College Students Awarded U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships to Study Abroad
Seven Berea College students are among the 850 American undergraduate students from 324 colleges and universities across the U.S. selected to receive the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. Gabriella Bugge, Elaine Barkley, Olivia Cundiff, Julie Jent, Joseph Leis, Kamryn Mason and Lilia Mundelius are the Berea students receiving Gilman Scholarships, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, to study or intern abroad during the fall term of the 2016-2017 academic year. Mapping Foreign Policy
What is foreign policy? How do you teach it? Dr. Lauren McKee, visiting professor at Berea College, answered those questions this summer by teaching a 4-week class titled U.S. East Asian Foreign Policy. The course built up to a crisis event and the students in the class represented different countries in East Asia. Using a 36 foot x 24 foot map on the floor, the students had to react to the crisis that had been introduced. They better visualized the crisis by walking across the giant map and became engaged by identifying places that were discussed in class. Dr. McKee said the map also gave students’ knowledge as to “where the mobilization of naval forces is possible and to calculate how close to another state is too close—that is, where is the 200 nautical mile territorial boundary of your own border.” In addition to the crisis simulation, the class played geographical games that tested the students’ knowledge of Asia. Berea Students Travel in the Summer
Summer is not only a time for relaxing, but also for learning, exploring, reflecting, and expanding one’s horizons. Berea students are involved in a myriad of activities and adventures both in Appalachia and abroad this summer. Many students are building their resumes and improving their career skills by interning at tech companies, schools, hospitals, and even here at Berea’s own Grow Appalachia Program. Along with the internships off campus, the Entrepreneurship for the Public Good (EPG) hosts twenty students for the Summer Institute, an eight-week study of entrepreneurial leadership through community economic development. Two Berea Students Win Project Pericles 2016 Letters to an Elected Official Competition

Megan Yocum and Tran Nguyen, two Berea College students, were one of five winning teams in the National 2016 Letters to an Elected Official competition sponsored by Project Pericles. The other winning student teams were from Allegheny College, Carleton College, Hendrix College, and Pitzer College.
For the competition, students from member campuses of Project Pericles sent letters on various public policy issues to elected officials throughout the United States. For the first time, students also submitted project proposals outlining how they would use their award. Each of the five winning teams will receive $500 to work on their issue during the 2016-17 academic year. 11 Berea College Students Awarded National Gilman Scholarships
Berea College’s Center for International Education (CIE) has announced that 11 students have been selected to receive the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The 11 recipients from Berea are part of a pool of 950 American undergraduate students from 356 colleges and universities across the nation selected to study or intern abroad during the summer 2016 term. Berea College’s Gilman Scholarship winners are: Daryl Sullivan, Nieva Arana, Jennifer Blume, Deanna Ellis, Jazmine Escamilla, Nicholas Oliver, Justice Wallace, Anna Reich, Willie Gosnell, Michael Moorer, and Amos Izerimana, who will study abroad in Ghana, Greece, Japan, The Gambia, Tanzania, Italy, Switzerland, and Costa Rica. Three other Berea College students, Esther Omolola, Rebecca Dixon, and Julie Michael, were named as alternates for studying in Argentina, Ghana, and Costa Rica. Berea College students received a total of $31,500 to help cover their summer expenses and a grand total of $61,000 for 20 students for the 2015-16 cycle. Reverend Michael Jinkins and Dr. Everett McCorvey will address the 260 graduates along with their faculty and invited guests at Berea College’s 2016 Baccalaureate & Commencement ceremonies, Sunday, May 8, 2016. Baccalaureate, at which Rev. Jinkins will speak, begins at 10:30 a.m. in Phelps Stokes Chapel. No tickets required. Dr. McCorvey will speak at Commencement, which begins at 2:00 p.m., in the Seabury Center, Main Arena.
